GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team concluded the regular season with a 6-1 loss to Furman at the Mickel Tennis Center. The Paladins won the doubles point and despite four singles matches going to a third set, Furman took five of the six singles matches for the win.
In doubles, Furman had a win at the #3 position and then claimed a pair of 6-2 decisions at the #2 and #1 positions to earn the point.
Singles action begin with the Paladins taking straight-set wins at the #5 and #1 positions. At the #4 position,
Jack Deveney won the first set 7-5, but the Paladins won the second and third which clinched the overall match for Furman.
The remaining three matches also went to three sets. At the #2 position,
Robbie Young won the first set 6-4 before Furman took the second set 7-6 in a 7-4 tiebreaker. The third set tiebreaker was won 10-2 by the Paladins.
At #6 singles,
Alex Horn dropped the first set, but won the second 7-6 with a 9-7 tiebreaker. He won the third set 6-4 to earn a point for the Terriers.
Ashe Ray lost the first set at the #3 position before winning the second set 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreaker. In the third set tiebreaker, Furman earned a 10-5 win to close out the day.
Wofford (7-11, 2-5) will begin action in the Southern Conference Tournament on Thursday, April 18 in Chattanooga. Furman is now 11-11 overall and 4-2 in SoCon play.
