CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Wofford College men's tennis team was defeated by Furman 4-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Southern Conference Championships hosted by the Champions Club on Thursday. The #3 seeded Paladins won the doubles point and the added wins in three singles matches to secure the win over the #6 seeded Terriers.
In doubles, Furman had a 6-1 win at the #3 position and then claimed a 6-3 decision at the #2 position to earn the doubles point. At #1 doubles,
Robbie Young and
Hugo Rask were leading 4-3 when the point was clinched.
The singles matches began with each team winning the first set in three of the six matches. Furman took the #4 position 6-1, 6-2 which gave them a 2-0 lead in the match. Wofford answered with a 6-4, 6-0 win by
Ashe Ray at the #3 singles position, but the Paladins were up 3-1 after a 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win at the #1 position.
Will Fullett earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at the #5 position to cut the Furman lead to 3-2 in the overall match.
The final two matches were decided in three sets. At #6 singles,
Alex Horn lost the first set 2-6, but responded with a 7-6 (7-4) tiebreaker win in the second set. The third set was won 6-2 by the Paladins which clinched the overall match. The #2 singles match was unfinished, but
Robbie Young won the first set 6-3, lost the second 4-6 and was leading in the third set 4-3 when it ended.
Wofford ends the season at 7-12 overall. Furman is now 12-11 overall and advances to the semifinals.
