SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The ball was flying at Russell C. King Field Tuesday night as the Wofford baseball team clubbed six homers and plated 15 runs in the fifth to topple Presbyterian 24-3 in seven innings. The Terriers improve to 25-10 with the win, and the Blue Hose drop to 19-18.
Â
This is the fourth time this season that Wofford has scored at least 20 runs in a game, the most in the nation.
Â
Starter
Dylan Rhadans (1-0) picked up his first win as a Terrier with 3.0 innings of work. He allowed two runs on four hits and one walk with four punchouts.
Morgan Lunceford followed, tossing 3.0 innings himself. He allowed only one run on two hits with no walks and a strikeout.
Dom Marcoccio tossed the final inning, a scoreless frame with no hits or walks. He struck out one.
Â
Blue Hose starter Tristan McGregor (3-3) suffered the loss after giving up seven runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk.
Â
The Terrier offense remained potent with 19 hits, 12 of which were extra-base hits. Half of those were homers, with those six long balls tying for third most in a game in program history. With two triples, Wofford added to its national-best tally for 23 on the season, a new program record for a campaign. This tops the previous high of 22, set in 1985 and 2016.
Â
Ten different Terriers recorded a hit with six tallying multi-hit efforts.
Jack Renwick led the way with six RBI on three hits, including a double and a homer. Renwick's RBI matches his career high.
Brice Martinez and
David Wiley both added three hits as well, knocking in four and five RBI, respectively. Martinez had a double and homer, and Wiley lifted a pair of long balls, his first-career multi-homer game.
Â
Daniel Jackson and
Tyler Hare both added homers as well. Jackson also hit a double with three RBI.
Dixon Black had a two-hit day like Jackson and Hare, with Black totaling two RBI. Adding in two walks, Black reached base four times in the game.
Â
Martinez stretched his hit streak to 21 games, tying for third longest in program history.
Marshall Toole knocked one hit, a triple, to extend his on-base streak to 35 games.
Â
After a scoreless first inning, Wofford got on the board first in the bottom of the second when
Jack Renwick lifted a three-run homer to left field.
Â
But Presbyterian responded with two runs in the top of the third, pulling within one, 3-2.
Â
The Terriers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the frame to stretch their lead.
Brice Martinez started things off by doubling home a run before
Daniel Jackson's sacrifice fly brought him home. Later in the inning,
David Wiley roped a two-run shot to left, making the score 7-2.
Â
After a scoreless fourth, the game flipped to a fifth inning that proved to be historic. Wofford scored 15 runs in the bottom of the fifth, a new program record for runs in an inning. Those 15 runs are tied for third most in an inning in SoCon history, the most by a SoCon squad since Western Carolina deposited 16 runs in one frame on Niagara in 2022. With 10 hits in the frame, the Terriers matched their record for base knocks in an inning. Four of those hits were homers, three of which came in the first four batters. In total, 19 hitters stepped into the box as Wofford batted around twice.
Â
The onslaught began with a Martinez solo shot to lead-off the inning. After a popout, Jackson and
Tyler Hare hit back-to-back jacks.
Adam Haber would triple home a run, and
Jack Renwick would single him in.
Marshall Toole then hit his own three-bagger for a run, and later Martinez singled in a pair. Jackson would double Martinez in, and
Lucas Manning would scurry home on a wild pitch. As the inning continued, Wiley clobbered his second homer of the game, a three-run clout to left.
Dixon Black would bring in the final runs of the frame with a two-run double to officially christen the record. With a 15-run fifth, Wofford leaped to a 22-2 lead.
Â
The Blue Hose responded in the top of the sixth with an RBI single, but a two-run Renwick double in the bottom of the frame made the score 24-3.
Â
That is where it stayed, as
Dom Marcoccio pitched a scoreless seventh to ice the run-rule triumph for Wofford.
Â
After returning home for this contest, Wofford hits the road once more in a return to conference play this weekend. The Terriers begin a three-game series at Mercer on Friday, April 19, with first pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
