Baseball Falls 9-8 to Mercer in Back-and-Forth Battle

Rain forces cancellation of second leg of scheduled doubleheader

MACON, Ga. – It was a race against weather Saturday afternoon in Macon, Georgia, as Wofford and Mercer looked to play a twin bill at OrthoGeorgia Park. After the Bears secured a walk-off victory, 9-8, in a hard-fought game one, Wofford led game two 5-1 in the second and was threatening for more damage before the rain began and refused to relent. With the contest rained out, the teams split two games over the weekend with Wofford dropping to 26-11 (7-4 SoCon) as Mercer improves to 20-17 (4-7 SoCon).

Wofford's Mike Eggert (6-3) suffered the loss in relief after pitching the final 1.2 innings of the game. Though he allowed only one run, it was the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. He gave up just two hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Camden Wicker started for the Terriers, tossing 6.0 innings with four run allowed on seven hits and just one walk. Wicker struck out four.

Mercer reliever Caleb Bohn (1-0) picked up the win after pitching the final 2.0 innings without allowing a run or hit.

Daniel Jackson led the way offensively for the Terriers with three hits and four RBI. Those three knocks are a new career high, and the RBI tie his career best. One of his hits was a homer, one of three by the Terriers in the contest. David Wiley added one of them as part of his two-hit outing with a pair of RBI. Tyler Hare launched the other, a solo shot for his only hit and RBI. Lucas Manning added two hits, the final multi-hit performer of Wofford's three, with an RBI. Manning also swiped a base, the lone Terrier steal.

Brice Martinez added a hit to tie for the second-longest hit streak in program history at 23 games, matching Lawson Hill's mark from 2022. Dixon Black added the only non-homer extra-base knock for the Terriers with a double. Marshall Toole, though putting forth a rare hitless effort, drew a walk and was hit with a pitch to stretch his on-base streak to 37.

After not plating a run until the seventh Friday night, the Terriers needed almost no time at all in game one today to get a run across. Dixon Black laced a double in the top of the first as the second batter of the game, and Daniel Jackson brought him home with a single to give Wofford a quick 1-0 edge.

But Mercer responded in the bottom of the second to pull ahead. An RBI double tied the game, and a batter later a two-run double pushed the Bears in front, 3-1.

Wofford pulled within a run in the top of the fourth. After a pair of singles put two runners on, Lucas Manning used a single of his own to score Brice Martinez and cut the margin to 3-2.

In the bottom of the frame, the Bears got that run back with a solo homer, extending the margin to 4-2.

But the Terriers flipped the script in the top of the sixth. After a Jackson infield single, David Wiley rocketed a two-run home run to left field, tying the game. Next up to bat was Tyler Hare, who played copycat and deposited his own long ball, a solo shot, to right field. The back-to-back jacks pushed Wofford ahead, 5-4.

The Wofford lead was extended in the top of the seventh with yet another blast. A walk and hit-by-pitch put two runners on base for Jackson, and the freshman made Mercer pay. He launched a ball over the center field wall to clear the bases and push the lead to 8-4.

But Mercer found a groove in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded, a double cleared them before a single brought that run home. The Bears pulled even at 8-8.

After Wofford went down in order in the top of the ninth, the Terriers turned over to defense looking to force extra innings for a second-straight contest. But the Bears led the inning off with a solo homer, walking off the contest to even the series with a 9-8 win.

The teams readied for game two and took the field looking to get nine more innings in. But the threat of rain loomed. Wofford had begun to find a rhythm in the top of the second and led 5-1 while still looking for more damage. But the severe weather had entered the area, and as the rain began to fall it showed no signs of letting up, forcing the game to be cancelled and the series to be shortened into a 1-1 split.

Wofford remains on the road for a midweek match-up at UNC Asheville on Tuesday, April 23. First pitch against the Bulldogs is set for 5:00 p.m. The Terriers will then return home for a weekend series against Western Carolina.
