Johnson City, TN – Despite holding an early 2-0 lead, Wofford softball ultimately fell to the ETSU Buccaneers 2-3 on Sunday, April 28.
The Terriers jumped on the board first in the second inning, getting the first two batters of the frame in scoring position via a leadoff walk from
Desirae Devine followed by a single and a steal from Lenzen. The next batter was
Kalli Petty, who plated her ninth RBI of the season in the form of Devine coming in on a groundout to second base.
Ally Bigham then concluded scoring for the Terriers with an RBI single at the shortstop and the 2-0 lead.
For Bigham, the RBI was her first of conference play and the first from the infielder since March 15 at Charleston Southern.
Defensively,
Margaret Axelson dipped her ERA just below the 2.00 mark after opening the contest with three innings of shutout softball and only two hits and a walk conceded. In total, she spun 10 innings at ETSU without allowing a single run and allowed six total hits, three walks and struck out five Buccaneers.
This brought in Wofford's pitcher of record in
Tayven Stephenson to start the fourth. She worked that initial inning without incident, but conceded the lead, and ultimately the game, to ETSU in the fifth. The freshman was only able to retire one batter in the half inning and gave up three runs on four hits in her first extended action since returning from injury.
Abby Greenwood then entered the game and secured the final five ETSU outs without giving up a hit.
With only three games remaining in the conference slate, Wofford is currently the fifth seed with a record of 9-9. Sitting two games behind both Mercer and Samford, the Terriers would have to sweep UNCG while Samford or Mercer would have to sweep the other for Wofford to earn the fourth seed and a first-round bye in the conference tourney.
Conversely, Wofford sits two games ahead of Western Carolina in the sixth spot and three games ahead of Furman at seven. UNCG would have to sweep Wofford and WCU/Furman each sweep their competition (WCU hosts Chattanooga and Furman hosts ETSU) for Wofford to fall below that fifth seed.
Finishing out the regular season, Wofford is home for the final four games – starting with Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, May 1, at 6 PM and then UNCG on May 4-5, with games beginning at 1 PM on each day. All four contests are currently slated to be streamed on ESPN+.
