SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After leading 4-1 entering the fifth, the Wofford baseball team was held off the board the rest of the way with UNCG flipping the script to claim a 12-4 victory in game one of the three-game series Friday evening at Russell C. King Field. The Terriers fall to 19-9 (4-3 SoCon) with the Spartans improving to 16-12 (5-2 SoCon).

Zac Cowan (5-1) suffered the loss, his first of the season, after allowing seven runs in 6.2 innings of work. He walked three but struck out eight. Four relievers followed.
Sam Stratton and
Dom Marcoccio each allowed one run in 0.2 innings with neither's run being earned.
Champ Davis pitched the final 0.2 innings, allowing no runs.

Spartan reliever Noah Chapman (2-1) picked up the win after pitching 3.1 innings of scoreless ball.

David Wiley led the way for Wofford for with two of the Terriers' seven hits, the lone multi-hit outing. He drove home a run with his solo shot, one of the two Terrier homers in the game. The other came from
Dixon Black, also a solo blast, for his lone RBI.
Tyler Bak drove in two runs, the lone multi-RBI outing.
Marshall Toole tallied a hit and a walk, extending his on-base streak to 28 games. He also remained perfect on stolen base attempts this season, swiping his 25
th base of the campaign.

Wofford was ever patient at the plate, working eight walks. Wiley tallied two of them, getting on base four total times.
Daniel Jackson also worked a pair.

The Spartans struck first in the top of the second with an RBI single for an early 1-0 lead.

But the Terriers responded in the bottom of the frame, tying the contest with
David Wiley's homer that he clobbered to straightaway dead center.

In the following frame,
Dixon Black led off with his own solo blast, this one to left center. Later in the frame,
Tyler Bak came up with the bases loaded and singled through the left side to bring in two and give Wofford a 4-1 advantage.

But UNCG began to chip away, scoring one run in each of the fifth and sixth innings to pull within a run, 4-3. The Spartans found a rhythm in the seventh, plating four to pull in front with a lead they would not relent.

UNCG added two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth, and Wofford was unable to respond en route to a 12-4 Spartan win.

Wofford will look to even the series tomorrow afternoon with game two set for 2:00 p.m. at Russell C. King Field. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
