Baseball Pulls Away Late to Run-Rule ETSU

Terriers score eight runs between sixth and seventh innings to compliment Cowan’s gem

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Tied 1-1 after three innings, the Wofford baseball team and the ETSU Buccaneers appeared to be in for a pitchers' duel Friday evening at Russell C. King Field before the Terrier offense began to crack through and ultimately exploded with eight runs over two innings to tally a run-rule 11-1 victory. Wofford improves to 32-15 (9-6 SoCon) and claims a lead in the series as ETSU drops to 31-16 (12-7 SoCon).

Zac Cowan (7-1) tossed all 7.0 innings for Wofford to grab the win. This is the third time this season that Cowan has gone the distance in a seven-inning run-rule victory. He allowed just one run on three hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Of the seven innings Cowan pitched, ETSU picked up baserunners in just two frames. Each of the other five frames were 1-2-3 innings.

His counterpart, Carter Fink (5-1), suffered the loss for ETSU after surrendering five runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk in 5.1 innings of work.

With 13 hits, the Terriers tallied double-digit base knocks for the 26th time this season. Adam Haber led the way with three hits and four RBI, both of which are new career highs. Dixon Black added two hits and two RBI. David Wiley and Lucas Manning each notched a pair of hits with one run knocked in, and Brice Martinez also added two hits. Haber, Manning and Tyler Hare all notched a double in the game with Black adding a homer that went over the right field scoreboard. It was his 10th long ball of the campaign. Though hitless, Daniel Jackson reached base three times by drawing a walk and getting hit by a pair of pitches, extending his on-base streak to 36 games. Despite also being hitless, Jack Renwick picked up an RBI in the contest.

After a scoreless first, Wofford notched the game's first run in the bottom of the second. Lucas Manning doubled and reached third on a wild pitch. Adam Haber then singled through the left side to plate Manning and give Wofford the early 1-0 edge.

But ETSU immediately responded, notching a triple and then a two-out single to plate the tying score for a 1-1 game.

Wofford reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth by taking advantage of a Buccaneer miscue. David Wiley led the inning off with a single and advanced to third after a wild pitch and flyout. During Jack Renwick's at-bat, the catcher's throw back to the pitcher went over his head and rolled away, allowing Wiley to scurry home for a 2-1 Terrier advantage.

That proved to be the spark the Terriers needed, as after Zac Cowan delivered another 1-2-3 frame in the top of the fifth, Wofford plated one more run in the bottom of the frame. This time, the Terriers played long ball when Dixon Black got ahold of one and crushed an opposite field rocket over the scoreboard in right to extend the lead to 3-1.

Cowan again put the Bucs down in order in the sixth and allowed his offense to get back to work in the bottom of the inning, and this time they plated four runs. Tyler Hare doubled to begin the inning, and Wiley's sacrifice moved him to third. Manning delivered an RBI single, and Jack Renwick plated one more with his RBI groundout. After a Marshall Toole single placed runners on the corners, Black drove in another run with his single, and Toole would then score on a wild pitch. The Terriers had stretched their lead to 7-1.

In the top of the seventh, ETSU finally got another baserunner with a lead-off single, but no runner would reach scoring position after Cowan induced a fielder's choice, strikeout and flyout to end the inning unscathed. Wofford's bats then got back to work looking to shorten the game. Daniel Jackson wore a pitch to begin the inning, and Hare worked a walk. Wiley singled to plate Jackson, and Manning drew a walk of his own to load the bases for Haber. The junior then laced a grounder the other way down the left field line, and as the ball rolled the bases cleared. Manning slid across the plate as the game-ending run on Haber's double, icing the 11-1 Terrier victory in run-rule fashion.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Wofford will look to claim the series, and the contest is set to be streamed on ESPN+.
