Women’s Soccer Defeats Stetson 1-0 For First Win of the Season

Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team kept the Stetson Hatters off the board en route to their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field. The Terriers defeated the Hatters 1-0 by way of a first-half goal from a free kick by Ines Obradovac.

Stetson came out of the gate aggressively, taking five shots in the first 22 minutes of the match - three of which were on goal. The defense for the Terriers proved true all afternoon, holding the Hatters to a clean 1-0 shutout, their first since a 2-0 victory against Chattanooga in 2022. Junior goalkeeper Rylee Godbold denied six shots on the way to a perfect save percentage.

"My back line has helped me out a lot. They spoke to me and kept me calm," said Godbold. "We have really been honing down on our back line and our transition the past few weeks. We have been focusing on that together, working hard and working on stopping those crosses."

The Terriers would strike in the 29th minute off a free kick just outside the penalty box. Ines Obradovac found the back of the net on what was her first goal of the season.

"I saw the corner on the left side, and there was an open space, so I hit it as hard as I can. I have been waiting for that first goal, so I am happy it happened, and hopefully there is more to come," said Obradovac on her first score of the season.

The Wofford defense stayed poised in the last 45 minutes of the match, countering five more Hatter shots. The scoring stalled out in the latter half for the Terriers, despite nine more shots attempted.

Stetson could not adjust to the Terrier defense in the second half, only attempting five shots compared to seven in the first 45 minutes. Wofford would go on to complete the 1-0 shutout for its first win of the season.

"One of the things we want to be good at is getting results at home," said head coach Elissa Post. "We bounced back from the loss on Thursday, and I thought the girls played great today. Our back line played almost perfect today, and we have to have that if we want to have success."

Wofford and Stetson were knotted up at 12 shots apiece throughout the game, but the Hatters took the edge in shots on goal. Rylee Godbold provided six saves in the match with Stetson totaling four. The Terriers outdid the Hatters in corner kicks, racking up four compared to Stetson's two.

The women's soccer team will look to carry this momentum into next week in what will be its first road match of the season. The Terriers will travel to Boone, North Carolina, to take on Appalachian State on Thursday with kick-off set for 6:00 p.m.
