ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team earned its second straight road win in a 2-0 triumph over the UNC Asheville Bulldogs at Greenwood Field on Thursday.
Ines Obradovac recorded her first career brace to lead the offensive attack for the Terriers.
Asheville kicked the match off with an aggressive style, earning a corner kick in the first minute. The Bulldogs nearly connected on the corner kick for an early goal, but freshman goalkeeper
Elizabeth Navola made an acrobatic save to keep Asheville off the board.
The Terriers responded with aggression of their own, sending off three shots before the 15
th minute of the match.
Ines Obradovac provided the first score of the match, firing a heater in the 18
th minute. The goal marked Obradovac's third game-winner of the season, placing her sixth all-time in Wofford history for game-winners in a single season. Obradovac entered the match ranked 23
rd in the nation in game-winners this season.
The team continued to hold the Bulldogs in check, led by a stellar defensive effort from the Wofford back line. Asheville found two more solid looks on goal before the half, but Navola held her own, denying both attempts. The Terriers would head into the break leading 1-0.
Delaney Minor registered the first shot of the final 45 minutes of action, just narrowly missing out on her first goal of the season. The Bulldogs responded with two shots on goal, but the defense was able to keep Asheville scoreless.
Obradovac scored her second goal of the night in the 60
th minute, giving the Terriers a 2-0 lead.
Megan Childress set the play up by sending a beautiful ball to Obradovac for her second assist of the season.
"I feel like we played fast together and connected really well tonight," said Obradovac on the offensive attack. "We have been connecting the last three games, so I am glad to see it happening, and I hope to see it continue."
Asheville kept the offensive pursuit up in the latter half of the match, recording two more shots on goal, but the young goalkeeper kept the Bulldogs out of the net for her second consecutive clean sheet – the first time a Wofford freshman goalkeeper has recorded two clean sheets since 2007.
"All the players in front of me did their job," said Navola. "We had some trouble with a few of the crosses, but we were able to get through it. Every single player that comes in does their job, and that's all I can ask for."
The Terriers saw three more clean looks at the goal, but the Asheville goalkeeper kept the team off the board for the remainder of the match. The Terriers would go on to win the contest 2-0 for their first win over UNC Asheville since 2014. The win over Asheville marks the third consecutive win for the Terriers, the longest streak since 2017 (four games).
"A lot of guts and a lot of heart," is what head coach
Elissa Post had to say on what she saw on the pitch tonight. "I was incredibly happy with the effort today. Our gameplan execution was almost perfect, and I thought all four lines played really well tonight."
Wofford finished the night with 12 shots while the Bulldogs closed the match with 15. The Terriers recorded eight shots on goal, the second most in a game this season.
Elizabeth Navola tallied a career-high seven saves on the night compared to Asheville's six. Wofford had four corner kicks compared to the Bulldogs' 10.
The Terriers will have a quick turnaround as the team will go down the road to USC Upstate on Saturday, September 14, with kick-off set for 7:00 pm. The team will be looking for its fourth consecutive win, all coming against Big South opponents.
