Volleyball Downs SC State Behind 15 Aces

Terriers tally straight-set triumph to open Terrier Invite

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – It took under an hour for the Wofford volleyball team to secure a win Thursday night inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium as the Terriers defeated South Carolina State in straight sets (25-11, 25-12, 25-17) over the course of 58 minutes in the opening match of the Terrier Invite. Wofford improves to 7-4 as the Bulldogs drop to 1-6.

The win came in dominant fashion for Wofford, most notably at the service line. Wofford's 15 aces are the most since posting 15 at Converse in 2011, and they are tied for fifth most in a three-set match in program history. SC State served only three aces. Wofford also dominated at the net with seven blocks to the two by the Bulldogs. The Terriers claimed advantages in kills (35-19), assists (30-19) and digs (40-31). Efficient as well, Wofford posted a .247 hitting clip with 13 errors compared to the .039 mark of SC State and its 16 errors.

Bradley Brown led the offensive charge with nine kills, hitting .538 with just two errors on 13 swings. Mary Emily Morgan added eight kills with two errors on 19 attempts for a .316 clip. Sarah MacLean tallied six kills with no errors on 14 attacks, hitting .429.

Maddy Frazier made her second-straight start and posted 18 assists to quarterback the offense. Frazier added two kills and an ace. Laney Klika held down the defense with 15 digs as Morgan added seven with Chloe Smith posting six. At the net, Annemarie Rakoski swatted four blocks, half of which were solo.

"I think it's just a big confidence thing," said Frazier of her successful first two starts. "Especially playing Tennessee, one of the most exciting matches I personally have played in my career, it's really going in with the mindset that I have to step up and help my team. It's really just a team effort."

The service line was the most dominant piece of the match for Wofford with five different Terriers recording an ace. Caroline Przystup led the way with six aces, a career high and the most by a Terrier since Bella Santoro recorded six in 2015. Przystup's six aces tie for fourth most all-time in a three-set match in program history. Smith and Brown both added three aces with Morgan tallying two.

"With every team that comes [here], we go ahead and treat it like the same old team and go with our gameplan," said Przystup of her serving display. "Tonight it was serving hard."

SC State claimed the first point of the match, but it was all Wofford from there as the Terriers embarked on a 10-point run. Sarah MacLean recorded a kill to kick the run off, which featured Chloe Smith downing three aces in a row to notch a new career high right out of the gates. The Bulldogs could not gather their footing from there, as back-to-back kills by Bradley Brown late made the margin 20-6. The sides traded a few points, but a Maddy Frazier dump kill created set point, and the ensuing rally saw a Bulldog error for the 25-11 set one win.

Sarah MacLean opened set two with a kill before back-to-back Bulldog points provided a 2-1 margin. But in similar fashion to the first set, Wofford used a 10-point run to effectively ice the set before it truly began. MacLean added another kill to spark it with a Bradley Brown ace following. MacLean would post two more kills in the run with Annemarie Rakoski and Mary Emily Morgan teaming for a block as the Terriers claimed an early 11-2 lead. A four-point run later in the set made the score 20-6, as this run was highlighted by a Frazier ace and two Brown kills. Brown recorded another kill and then an ace shortly thereafter for a 23-8 lead before the Bulldogs recorded two-straight points. Mad Wilson notched a kill for set point, but SC State kept fighting with two more points of its own. However, Bri Mahoney's kill ended the set in a 25-12 margin for Wofford.

Set three was the tightest of them all. After Wofford claimed the opening three points, SC State embarked on a five-point run for the lead. After trading points, the Bulldogs led 8-5 following two kills, but the Terriers came roaring back with a 13-point run, their longest of the night. A service error helped Wofford sideout with Caroline Przystup on the serve for Wofford, and she orchestrated the emphatic run from there. After an attack error, Przystup delivered four aces in her next five serves. She would add two more later in the run to secure all six of her career-best aces in the swing. Morgan punctuated the run with a kill, providing an 18-8 advantage for her Terriers. SC State pulled within 20-14 before two Emily Normand kills made the margin 22-14. After two more Bulldog points, Normand posted another kill before a Brown solo block for match point. After one more Bulldog point, Morgan ended the contest with a kill as Wofford claimed set three 25-17 and thusly the match.

The Terrier Invite will continue tomorrow with two more matches. Valparaiso will see its first action of the event, playing twice against Presbyterian and SC State at 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., respectively. Wofford will not play tomorrow, returning to action on Saturday morning against the Beacons at 11:00 a.m. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
