SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team fell 2-1 against Chattanooga in the Southern Conference opener on Thursday at Snyder Field. The Terriers threatened in the second half after a goal from
Ines Obradovac but could not complete the late comeback.
Chattanooga started off the game aggressive on the offensive end, taking three shots before the five-minute mark. The Mocs continued to pick up the intensity, finding their first goal of the match in the 16
th minute.
Delaney Minor and
Kate Markey both found quality looks at the net, but the Chattanooga goalkeeper denied both Terrier attempts. The Mocs quickly flipped the field with a counterattack, leading to their second goal in the 19
th minute.
The Terrier defense was able to keep Chattanooga off the board for the remainder of the half, deterring five more attempts. Wofford would head into the break trailing 2-0.
The second half saw a much more offensive-minded Terrier squad, with
Ines Obradovac scoring her sixth goal of the season in the 48
th minute on a laser from just across midfield.
Megan Childress picked up the assist on the score, her third of the year.
Ines Obradovac drew a yellow card in the 67
th minute that ultimately led to a free kick right outside the Chattanooga box, but the Mocs were able to jump in front of the shot from Obradovac. The Terriers had one more clean look at the goal, with a nice shot from
Ellie Gower, but the Chattanooga goalkeeper was able to deny the final attempt of the night.
Despite 12 more shots from the Mocs, the Terrier defense held its own in the second half, not allowing another goal.
Chattanooga out-shot Wofford 24 to 8, with 11 on goal from the Mocs and four on goal from the Terriers. UTC finished the night with seven corner kicks compared to Wofford's three.
Elizabeth Navola tallied a career-high nine saves.
The Terriers will look to bounce back on Sunday as they travel to the lower state to take on The Citadel at 2:00 pm.
