Megan Childress Records Hat Trick as Women’s Soccer Defeats The Citadel 4-3

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team defeated The Citadel Bulldogs 4-3 on the road at WLI Field on Sunday for its first win over the Bulldogs since 2021. Megan Childress scored three goals on the day for her first-career hat trick. The hat trick from Childress serves as the first since 2021 and just the fourth hat trick in program history.

The game entered halftime with a 0-0 score but saw seven goals scored in the final 45 minutes of action. The four goals scored by the Terriers mark the most goals scored in a game since a 4-2 win at VMI in 2021.

The Terriers opened the afternoon with a near-score from Ellie Gower in the sixth minute, but the Bulldog goalkeeper was able to deter the attempt. The Citadel responded with an attack of its own in the 12th minute, except Elizabeth Navola was there to tally the save in what was the only shot on goal in the first half for the Bulldogs.

The back line of the Terriers held a firm grip on the offensive plan from the Bulldogs, only allowing four shots in the first 45 minutes, with just one on goal. Delaney Minor anchored the unit, playing all 45 minutes in the first half.

McKinley High gave Wofford another quality look at a score, sending a strike in the 27th minute, but once again, The Citadel keeper was able to fend off the shot. The Terriers would head into the break all knotted up at 0-0.

The second half saw a much more action-packed slate, as seven goals were scored between the teams in the final 45 minutes. Megan Childress scored the first goal of the game for either squad just two minutes into the latter half. Childress registered her third goal of the season in what was a one-on-one scenario with the Bulldog keeper.

The Citadel responded in the 54th minute on a tough yellow card given to the Terriers inside their own box, leading to a penalty kick for the Bulldogs. The spot kick would be converted into a Citadel goal, tying the game at one-all.

Megan Childress and company marched right down the field to respond just one minute later, with her second goal of the afternoon coming in the 55th minute. Childress fired off a beautiful shot from the right side of the field to put the Terriers ahead 2-1, their second lead of the day.

The Bulldogs kept the pressure on, however, scoring the fourth goal between the teams in an 11-minute span to tie the game 2-2.

Ines Obradovac would be the next Terrier to strike, scoring her seventh goal of the season in the 70th minute off a bang-bang corner kick. The ball bounced around from player-to-player after the corner was sent in from Ellie Gower, but Obradovac found the back of the net to lift the team to a 3-2 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

The action did not stop there, as The Citadel was able to tie the game for a third time in the 75th minute. The team converted on a cross sent in from the right side of the pitch, resulting in a header to tie the game at 3-3.

Megan Childress continued her dominant day, scoring her third goal of the game in the 76th minute to complete the first hat trick of her career. Ines Obradovac tallied the assist on the game-winner, her second of the season. The Terriers defense held strong in the final 14 minutes of action to take down The Citadel Bulldogs 4-3 for their first conference win of the season.

The Terriers out-shot The Citadel 13 to 12, with seven shots on goal for Wofford and six on goal for the Bulldogs. Both teams finished the day with four corner kicks apiece.

Wofford improves to 5-5-1 on the season, matching its win total from last year while improving to 3-1-1 on the road. The Terriers will look to continue their offensive prowess with a road challenge against Samford set for Friday at 6:00 pm central time.
