BIRMINGHAM, ALA. – The Wofford women's soccer team dropped its final game of September 4-2 against Samford University on Friday at the Samford Track and Soccer Stadium. The Terriers saw goals from
Ines Obradovac and the first-career goal from
Madeline Smolenski but could not hold on for the win in Birmingham.
The Terriers struck first on the night, as
Madeline Smolenski put the team on the board in the sixth minute off a left-footed strike. Wofford would jump out to an early 1-0 lead in what was Smolenski's first-career score and the second freshman to score a goal this season.
The lead did not last long, however, as Samford scored the equalizer in the 13
th minute. The game-tying goal came from a foul inside the Terrier box, resulting in a penalty kick for Ella Simpson of the Bulldogs.
Ines Obradovac came away with the foul in what was a tough call for Wofford.
Obradovac had a quick answer for Samford, marching down the field to score her eighth goal of the season in the 18
th minute. The rocket of a shot was assisted by
Megan Childress and gave the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Childress tallied her fourth helper of the season on the play along with her third assist to Obradovac this year.
Samford's Ella Simpson was able to find another penalty kick, her second of the night. The Bulldogs converted on the kick to even the score at two-all. The Terriers would head into halftime all knotted up with Samford at 2-2.
The second half saw a much more offensive-minded attack out of Samford, as they sent in three quick shots within ten minutes to start the half. The Wofford defense held firm until the 58
th minute when the Bulldogs were able to score their third goal of the night. The shot served as the first score of the night that was not a penalty kick for Samford. After stretching the game to a one-score lead, Samford kept the pressure on. Just four minutes later the team scored another goal to take a 4-2 lead in the 63
rd minute.
Ellie Gower registered her first shot of the night in the 52
nd minute, with shots also coming from Obradovac,
Addison Watt and
Bailey Mullen. The Terriers could not find another goal in the remaining minutes as the team would fall to Samford 4-2 in Birmingham.
Samford outshot Wofford 22 to seven, which included ten shots on goal compared to the Terriers' two. The Bulldogs closed the night with 11 corner kicks while Wofford attempted one.
Elizabeth Navola recorded five saves in the game.
The Terriers will be back in action next Thursday with a home matchup against ETSU slated for 6:00 pm.
