Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team was in a tight battle early against Elon, but the Phoenix pulled away to register a 4-2 win Monday morning at Snyder Field. The Terriers celebrated their eight seniors prior to the match.
Elon started off the match with five shots in the first ten minutes of action. The Terriers were able to deter all five, but in the 11
th minute Elon slipped one through to the back of the net to take an early 1-0 lead. Just three minutes later in the 14
th minute, the Phoenix would strike again to extend their lead to 2-0.
Freshman
Kate Markey responded with a strike in the 16
th minute, the first score of her career.
Megan Childress tallied the assist to cut the deficit down to one goal. Elon sounded off two more goals before the half ended, scoring in the 33
rd and 39
th minutes. The Terriers would head into the break trailing 4-1.
Wofford corrected its defensive mistakes, only allowing two shots in the second half while keeping Elon off the board. Freshman goalkeeper
Elizabeth Navola started the second half in goal, making the first appearance of her career. Navola recorded her first career save in the 78
th minute.
The Terriers found their second goal of the match in the 68
th minute off a score from
Megan Childress to shorten the lead to two goals. This was Childress's first goal of the season. The team fired off four more shots in the final 45 minutes, but none found the back of the net. Wofford would go on to lose the match 4-2.
Elon totaled 15 shots, seven on goal, compared to the Terriers' six shots, three of which were on goal. Wofford finished the game with zero corner kicks, while Elon registered 10.
The women's soccer team will be back at Snyder Field on Thursday, September 5, to take on Winthrop University. Kick-off is set for 6:00 pm.
