Spartanburg, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team found goals from three different Terriers en route to a 3-1 victory over the Winthrop Eagles at Snyder Field on Thursday.
The Terriers started the first half strong, firing off three shots in the first eight minutes of action.
Megan Childress notched her second goal of the season off a deflected shot from
Ines Obradovac in the 15
th minute. Obradovac tallied the assist to put Wofford ahead 1-0.
After a slow start, the Eagles found the back of the net in the 34
th minute to tie the match at one-all. Winthrop snuck in one more solid look at a goal, but freshman
Elizabeth Navola would deny the attempt in what was the first start of her career.
Wofford continued to apply constant pressure on the Eagles, sending five more shots on target before
Katherine Elliott netted her first career goal in the 43
rd minute on an assist from
Kate Markey. The team would head into the break leading Winthrop 2-1.
Ines Obradovac added the third goal of the match in the 53
rd minute to further the Eagle deficit to 3-1.
Caileen Almeida provided the set-up for Obradovac, who finished the night with one assist and a goal scored.
Winthrop registered eight more shots in the second half, but the defense of the Terriers stood strong, not allowing a goal in the final 45 minutes. Wofford would go on to win the match 3-1 for its second win of the season.
The Terriers scored a season-high three goals behind 16 shots with nine on target. Winthrop finished the match with 10 shots, five on target. Both teams ended the night with seven corner kicks apiece.
Elizabeth Navola tallied four saves on the way to her first win in goal.
Wofford will look to ride its momentum into a three-game road stint that starts on Sunday, September 8, with a trip to Radford University in Virginia. Kick-off is set for 2:00 pm.
