Volleyball Claims First SoCon Win in Four Sets Over Chattanooga

Terriers defeat Mocs behind six double-doubles and digging records

SPARTANBURG, S.C. –  In the Southern Conference opener, the Wofford volleyball team roared back after dropping set one against the Chattanooga Mocs Thursday night to win in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20) inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The triumph lifts the Terriers to 9-4 (1-0 SoCon) while the Mocs fall to 8-6 (0-1 SoCon).

The win stretches Wofford's home winning streak to 14 matches. The match saw both teams express differing skillsets with the Mocs owning a 10-5 block advantage while Wofford boasted an 8-4 ace lead. The Terriers tallied 67 kills to the 46 of the Mocs while also touting a 66-46 assist advantage. Most notably, Wofford recorded 115 digs to the 95 of Chattanooga. Those digs are a new program record for a four-set match and are tied for fifth all-time in any match in Terrier history. Though committing 10 more errors, 26-16, Wofford displayed better hitting efficiency with a .201 clip over 204 attempts while holding Chattanooga to a .160 mark over 188 swings.

Six different Terriers recorded a double-double in the contest with Laney Klika doing so in historic fashion. Her 36 digs and 10 assists led to her second double-double of the season and her career. Those 36 digs are a new career high, and they have set a new program record for digs in a four-set match by a player. They check in at third most in any match in Wofford history and are the most since Brittany Thompson eclipsed 40 twice in 2008. Klika also posted a pair of aces.

"I think we have a lot of girls who are just really relentless on defense," said Klika of the historic digging night. "We see balls and we go for it. Chattanooga was scrappy, and we got a lot more balls coming over, and we had more opportunities just to show what we can do."

On the offensive end, Mary Emily Morgan tallied a career-high 19 kills to pace the Terriers alongside her 21 digs. It marks her 12th-career double-double and her fourth on the season. Morgan added two aces, one of four Terriers with exactly two. Bri Mahoney posted 12 kills and 14 digs with two aces, doing so in just three sets of play after not seeing action in set one. Her three-set double-double is the third of her campaign and fifth of her career. Sarah MacLean notched her first-career double-double with 11 kills and a career-best 12 digs. Bradley Brown marked four Terriers with 10-plus kills, recording 11 to go with her two solo blocks.

"Lynze (Roos) knows I'm always ready; everybody on our bench is ready," said Mahoney of her performance off the bench. "We're 16 strong. We're a very talented team all around, so whoever's on the court – we all trust each other and have each other's backs."

Feeding those hitters were the dynamic setting duo of Taylor Pecht and Maddy Frazier. Pecht led the way with 29 assists, and her 12 digs secured her 14th-career double-double and seventh this season. She now owns four in a row. Frazier posted her second double-double with 24 assists and a career-high 13 digs. She added two aces.

"I think that just starts in practice," said Morgan of the team's depth with six double-doubles. "We know that conference [play] is just a different beast than the preseason tournaments, and that starts every day with just pushing each other. I would say everybody on our team has a double-double at practice every day, so that just really translates. It's also wonderful to see so many of our younger players have such a great start to their conference journeys as well."

At the net, Annemarie Rakoski led the way with her trio of swats, all solo. With Brown's two, every Wofford block on the night was unassisted.

Wofford came out of the gates hot, leading the match 6-1 early after a Mary Emily Morgan kill. Chattanooga chipped away, though, eventually using a three-point run to lead 13-11. A Morgan ace later capped a Wofford three-point swing for a 16-15 Terrier edge. The sides continued to trade the lead with the Terriers pulling back ahead at 23-21 thanks to a Chloe Smith kill. But a Moc kill sparked a four-point run that flipped the set to Chattanooga at 25-23.

Looking to respond, the Terriers came out hot again to open set two, leading 8-2 quickly. This is due to a six-point Wofford run that featured kills by Morgan, Bradley Brown and Sarah MacLean alongside a Laney Klika ace. The Mocs bounced back, however, and chipped away to ultimately claim a 15-12 lead after a five-point swing. Freshly into the match for set two, Bri Mahoney got to work and posted a kill, and she then delivered an ace after Morgan's kill to level the set at 15-all. The teams traded blows with a Maddy Frazier ace pushing Wofford up 21-17. Later in the set, Mahoney's kill created set point, and after a Moc kill, Morgan iced the frame 25-22 with her kill.

The Mocs looked to respond with a 6-3 lead early in set three before a five-point Terrier run flipped the script at 8-6 after Morgan's kill and ace to couple with two kills by Brown. Set three proved to be a see-saw set most of the way with a Moc kill bringing Chattanooga to within 17-14. But back-to-back Terrier points pushed Wofford ahead 19-14. Despite Chattanooga staying on Wofford's heels, the Terriers stayed just a step ahead with MacLean's kill making the score 23-19. After a Moc point, back-to-back kills from Mogan and Mahoney clinched the set 25-19.

A set away from victory, the Terriers led 10-8 early following a Brown kill and Annemarie Rakoski solo block. But Chattanooga pushed back to claim a 12-10 lead after a four-point run. The Terriers would fight back to lead 15-14 with a Morgan kill and block by Brown, but the Mocs again won three in a row to lead 17-15. Locked in another tight battle, the teams traded haymakers until a Mahoney kill and Moc error pushed Wofford ahead 20-19. Chattanooga claimed the following point to tie the contest, but Mahoney's ensuing kill sparked a Terrier run that ended the night and prevented another Moc score. Mahoney got to work again with an ace, and Rakoski's block set up MacLean for set point. On the next rally, Morgan delivered the dagger with her career-best 19th kill of the match to claim the fourth frame 25-20 and thusly the match.

Wofford wraps up its homestand and opening SoCon weekend tomorrow with a tilt against Samford. The rematch of last season's SoCon Championship is set for 6:00 p.m. inside the Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium with the contest also streaming on ESPN+.
