SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College men's tennis team earned a 5-2 win over Queens at the Reeves Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers won the doubles match and then took four of the six singles matches for the victory in the home opener.
In doubles, the Terriers won the first game in all three matches. At #1 doubles,
Robbie Young and
Jack Deveney had a 3-0 lead and earned the win by a 6-1 margin. The #2 pairing of
Hugo Rask and
Ian Rasheed took a 3-1 lead and secured the doubles point for the Terriers with a 6-2 win. At #3 doubles,
Daniel Clivio and
Jack Burdell were up 2-1 and the match was left unfinished at 3-3.
In singles, the Terriers won the first set in five of the six matches.
Ian Rasheed had a 6-3, 6-2 win at the #3 singles position.
Jack Burdell added a 6-0, 6-4 win at the #5 singles position to give Wofford a 3-0 lead in the overall match. After
Robbie Young dropped his match at #1 singles,
Hugo Rask had a 6-3, 6-1 win at the #6 position to clinch the match win for the Terriers.
The final two matches each went to three sets. At the #2 position,
Jack Deveney won the first set 6-2, but dropped the second and third sets 4-6, 3-6.
Daniel Clivio had a 6-4 win in the first set and lost the second set 6-1. In the third set, he took an early 3-0 lead and closed out the match with a 6-2 win.
"We played well today," said head coach
Rod Ray. "I'm proud of how we attacked the doubles point and stayed true to our beliefs. Our response in singles showed the strong character of our team. Queens is a talented team that plays hard, so we feel good about today's win."
For the next match, Wofford (1-2) will be on the road on Saturday, February 1, at Stetson.
