Volleyball Takes Down No. 6 Samford; Advances to SoCon Semifinals

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford volleyball team earned a straight-set win against No. 6 Samford in the Southern Conference Quarterfinals on Friday night in Harrah's Cherokee Center. The Terriers will take on No. 2 Furman on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

The Terriers totaled 44 kills on a .257 hitting percentage while Samford had 36 kills and hit .185. Wofford dished out 44 assists to Samford's 33. The Terriers were solid on defense, posting 53 digs and nine blocks. The Bulldogs recorded 48 digs and seven blocks.

Leading the attacking efforts was Annemarie Rakoski who recorded a career-high 13 kills on a .550 hitting percentage. Bradley Brown followed behind with 10 kills, and Natalie Arnold had eight. Taylor Pecht and Maddy Frazier orchestrated the offense, with Pecht handing out 22 assists and Frazier with 18. Caroline Przystup led the team with two aces while Laney Klika had one.

Rakoski posted a match-high seven blocks. Emily Normand had three. Laney Klika paced the team with 18 digs, and Chloe Smith added 12. Taylor Pecht was just shy of a double-double, closing the night with eight digs. Caroline Pryzstup also had eight.

Samford came out firing in the first set, forcing a Wofford timeout after scoring four-straight points. The Terriers answered with four of their own right out of the stoppage to tie the set at four-all. The teams battled back-and-forth from there until Wofford rolled off four-straight points to take a comfortable 13-9 lead. Samford fought back to even it up at 19-19 and make Wofford burn its final timeout of the stanza. The Terriers would hold on to win set one 25-22.

Despite Samford scoring the first point of set two, Wofford used a strong blocking front to take a 6-5 lead early on. No team could build a lead greater than two points halfway through set two. Back-to-back blocks by Annemarie Rakoski gave the Terriers some momentum, allowing the team to take a 19-15 lead. It was an 8-1 run by Wofford that extended the lead. The Terriers would go on to take set two 25-18.

Set three saw Wofford jump out to a quick 4-0 lead after a block by Natalie Arnold and Annemarie Rakoski. The Terriers were able to build that to a 10-5 lead, forcing Samford to burn a timeout. Wofford would continue to hold a steady lead from there. Samford battled back to cut the deficit to two points, 20-18. The comeback would fall short for Samford, and Wofford would take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.

The Terriers will take on No. 2 Furman in the semifinals on Saturday, November 22, at 7:00 p.m. The Terriers defeated Furman in straight sets at home but fell to the Paladins 3-1 on the road earlier this season.
