Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team scored 26 points in the fourth quarter but fell 73-59 to the Charlotte 49ers at Halton Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Terriers fall to 1-4 while Charlotte improves to 4-3.
 
Wofford closed the afternoon shooting 24-of-61 (39.3%) from the field and made seven threes on 27 attempts. Charlotte made 25-of-68 (36.8%) field goal attempts and converted nine of its 27 three-pointers. The Terriers lost the rebounding margin for the second-straight game, with Charlotte totaling 44 boards to 37 from Wofford. The teams were even with 26 points in the paint.
 
Charlotte forced 17 Wofford turnovers – 12 of which were steals. The 49ers turned that into 20 points. Wofford forced nine Charlotte turnovers and had seven steals. The Terriers tallied 11 assists while Charlotte had 15.
 
Leading the scoring efforts for Wofford was Toni Warren with a season-high of 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting. Gabby Mundy followed behind with a career-high 17 points, six boards, and a team-high five assists. Queen Ikhiuwu was the third Terrier in double-figures as the junior scored 11 points. Ikhiuwu led the team with nine rebounds, just one shy of her second double-double of the year. She also rejected two shots. Toni Warren followed behind with seven boards.  
 
Charlotte started the first quarter with a quick bucket, but the teams struggled from the field after that. Gabby Mundy finally got Wofford on the board at the 7:35 mark in the first quarter. The scoring heated up from there, with Charlotte hitting three-straight threes. The Terriers responded with Queen Ikhiuwu's first three of the season, but Wofford would go into the second quarter trailing 15-10.
 
Toni Warren had a hot second quarter, scoring eight points in the frame. Her six points early in the quarter kept Charlotte within striking distance. Even with the hot streak from Warren, Charlotte would lead 25-18 midway through the second quarter. Six-straight points from Wofford cut the deficit to one point with 3:09 to play in the half. The teams would trade makes to close the second quarter, and the Terriers would enter the break trailing 29-28.
 
Charlotte came out of the half on an 8-0 run, handing Wofford a 37-28 deficit. Toni Warren ended the Wofford drought with a three-pointer. Charlotte would end up scoring 25 points to just four by the Terriers in the third quarter. Turnovers were an issue during the stanza, with Wofford committing 13 in the third quarter alone. The Terriers would enter the final quarter trailing 53-33.
 
Back-to-back deep balls from Wofford allowed the team to start the fourth frame on a 6-0 run. Toni Warren hit her second three of the day, while Gabby Mundy hit her first of the afternoon. Despite scoring 26 points in the quarter, Wofford's comeback would fall short as the team lost 73-59.
 
The Terriers will travel to UNC Asheville on Tuesday, November 25, for a 4:00 p.m. tip-off before returning home on Sunday, November 30, to take on Georgia Southern. The game can be streamed live on ESPN+.
