ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team defeated the UNC Asheville Bulldogs 80-54 on Tuesday evening at Kimmel Arena. The Terriers improve to 2-4 while UNC Asheville falls to 2-4.
"Coming into the game we were focusing on three things," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "We wanted to take care of the ball, defend without fouling, and rebound. We knew we could not give them extra possessions. We played clean and executed our offense."
The Terriers closed the evening shooting 29-of-65 (44.6%) from the field and made nine of their 24 attempts from deep. UNC Asheville shot 16-of-53 from the field and converted five of its 15 three-pointers. Wofford finished 13-of-15 (86.7%) from the charity stripe.
Wofford was led by four double-digit scorers, including a career-high 24 points from
Gabby Mundy. Following behind was
Molly Masingale with 14 points, and
Queen Ikhiuwu with 13.
Maddie Heiss rounded out the group with 11. Heiss added 10 rebounds for her first-career double-double.
The Terriers claimed a 48 to 30 rebounding advantage over the Bulldogs, while scoring 36 points in the paint compared to 18 by Asheville.
Maddie Heiss led the efforts on the glass with a career-high 10 boards.
Molly Masingale was just shy of a double-double with eight rebounds, and
Mia Flor added seven.
Gabby Mundy finished with six.
Wofford totaled 17 assists to Asheville's 11, as
Gabby Mundy dished out a career-high seven helpers.
Maddie Heiss and
Molly Masingale followed behind with four each. The Terriers won the turnover battle, committing 12 turnovers compared to 14 from the Bulldogs. Wofford scored 14 points off those turnovers.
Molly Masingale led the way with two steals, while
Queen Ikhiuwu held it down in the paint with three blocks.
Gabby Mundy got the scoring action started for Wofford in the first quarter with a nice layup. That would be the first of 15 points in the first quarter for Mundy. The Bulldogs responded with a bucket, and the teams would trade baskets over the next few minutes. A 13-1 run to close the quarter allowed the Terriers to end the first frame with a 23-10 lead. Wofford kept UNC Asheville without a field goal for the final 5:56 of the quarter.
Molly Masingale added on to that run with a quick score to start the second quarter, but six unanswered points from the Bulldogs made a single-digit deficit. Wofford rattled off an 8-0 run to answer, bringing the lead back to 17 points, 33-16. Those eight points were the start of a 20-4 Asheville skid. The Terriers would head into the break with a 45-23 lead.
UNC Asheville got on the board first to start the second half, but
Molly Masingale and
Queen Ikhiuwu responded with back-to-back buckets. The next possession down
Gabby Mundy nailed a three to give her a career-high 20 points. Wofford would lead by as many as 28 points before taking a 63-41 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
UNC Asheville scored 10 unanswered points to start the final quarter of the game, cutting the Wofford lead to 15 points with 7:19 left in the contest. The Terriers struggled from the field in the final quarter, not making their first basket until the 3:59 mark in the fourth. Shots started falling after that, as the team totaled 11 points over the next two minutes of action. Wofford would go on to win 80-54.
The Terriers will be back at home for the first time in 27 days, as the team will face Georgia Southern on Sunday, November 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium.
