OXFORD, MISS. – The Wofford women's basketball team had a slow start against No. 17 ranked Ole Miss in an 86-52 loss at The Sandy and John Black Pavillion at Ole Miss. Despite the loss, three Terriers finished in double figures.
Toni Warren led the way with 15 points.
The Terriers fall to 4-6 on the season and will look to bounce back at East Carolina on Wednesday, December 17. Ole Miss improves to 9-1.
Wofford finished the afternoon shooting 19-of-54 (35.2%) from the field and made one three-pointer. Ole Miss shot 35-of-73 (47.9%) from the field and knocked down five of its 20 attempts from three. The Terriers went 13-of-20 at the free throw line.
Toni Warren's team-high 15 points was followed by 14 from
Queen Ikhiuwu, who shot 6-of-11 from the field.
Maddie Heiss followed behind with 10 points. Heiss went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, making it 22-straight made free throws for the junior. Heiss also posted a team-best six rebounds.
Gabby Mundy dished out four assists.
It was a tough start for Wofford in the first quarter, as the team fell victim to a 9-0 Ole Miss run right out of the gate. The Terriers were able to cut the lead to seven points after a free throw from
Gabby Mundy and a triple by
Toni Warren. Another score from
Maddie Heiss gave Wofford six unanswered points and cut the Ole Miss lead to 11-6. Ole Miss would control the latter half of the stanza, closing the quarter with a 25-10 lead. An 11-0 run from the Rebels allowed the team to separate from Wofford.
Ole Miss scored on its first possession of the second quarter, but
Gabby Mundy responded with a pair of free throws on the offensive end. From there
Queen Ikhiuwu took over, scoring eight-straight points for the Terriers. The last basket from Ikhiuwu shortened the deficit to 14 points, 34-20. Ole Miss rattled off a 9-2 run to respond.
Toni Warren scored the final points for either team, as Wofford would enter the half trailing 41-24. The Terriers kept Ole Miss without a field goal for the final 4:16 of the half.
Wofford cut the lead to 15 points after
Queen Ikhiuwu scored on the first chance of the second half. An 11-0 run from the Rebels in the middle of the third quarter extended the lead, as Wofford trailed by 32 points.
Maddie Heiss nailed a buzzer-beater layup at the end of the quarter, with Ole Miss leading 65-36 at the start of the final frame.
The fourth quarter began with a score from Ole Miss, but
Maddie Heiss responded with a second-chance layup on the next trip down. The Terriers could not mount a comeback, losing the game 86-52.
Wofford will be back in action on Wednesday, December 17, as the team will travel to East Carolina for an 11:00 a.m. tipoff. The Terriers will come back home on December 19 to take on King University.
