GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team trailed by one point in the third quarter, but the offense slowed for the remainder of the game as the team fell 80-59 at East Carolina on Wednesday. The Terriers are now 4-7 with the loss, while East Carolina improves to 7-5.
Wofford closed the game shooting 21-of-62 (33.9%) from the field while knocking down five three-pointers. East Carolina shot 28-of-57 (49.1%) from the field and made six of its 17 attempts from deep.
Queen Ikhiuwu led the Terriers with a career-high of 19 points.
The two teams were even in the rebounding category, as both finished with 35.
Toni Warren led the team with eight boards. East Carolina outscored Wofford 34-24 inside the paint and had 40 bench points compared to four from the Terriers.
East Carolina started the game with six unanswered points, taking a 6-0 lead early on. A jump shot by
Toni Warren got the Terriers on the board, but ECU answered on the other end. With Wofford trailing 10-4 a few possessions later, the team would embark on a 9-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. The run was part of a 16-2 Pirate skid, allowing Wofford to take a 19-12 advantage with 1:59 remaining in the first stanza. The Terriers only allowed one ECU field goal in the final five minutes of action. Wofford would close the quarter with a 19-16 lead.
A layup at the start of the second quarter by
Queen Ikhiuwu extended Wofford's advantage to 21-16. Five-straight points from East Carolina tied the game at 21, and the Pirates would take the lead back a couple possessions later. It was an 18-5 run from East Carolina in total, as the team led by eight points with just under two minutes left in the first half. Wofford would enter the half trailing 37-30.
East Carolina scored the first four points of the third quarter, but Wofford responded with nine-straight points to shorten the deficit to two points, 41-39. Despite a score from the Pirates the next trip down,
Gabby Mundy would drill a corner three to get the game within one point. A 12-0 run by East Carolina gave them a 55-42 lead with 3:53 remaining in the third stanza. The Terriers went the final six minutes of action without a field goal and would head into the fourth down 60-44.
The Pirates continued their run in the fourth, scoring the first four points of the final frame. East Carolina would accumulate a 21-2 run across the two quarters. Wofford put forth its best efforts in the closing quarter, but the team could not complete the comeback ultimately falling 80-59.
The Terriers will be back in action on Friday, December 19, at 1:00 p.m. as the team will welcome King University to town. Wofford will follow that up with its final game of 2025 – a road trip to Georgia Tech on December 28.
