SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team dominated from the start in a 92-42 victory over King University on Friday afternoon inside of Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers improve to 5-7 with the win.
"It's good to be back home," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "Everybody got to play and everybody played well. I was really happy with the way we rebounded. For the most part we played clean, and it is just good to get a win at home."
Wofford finished the day shooting 29-of-66 (43.9%) from the field and knocked down nine three-pointers on 31 attempts. King shot 13-of-60 (21.7%) and made nine deep balls on 39 tries. The Terriers went 25-of-31 from the charity stripe.
Maddie Heiss went 2-of-2, extending her streak to 30 makes in a row.
Queen Ikhiuwu scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting.
Maddie Heiss followed behind with a season-high 18 points.
Madi Hawk was the third double-digit scorer, adding 12 points. All players scored in the win, including the first points of
Sara Deidda's season.
The Terriers outrebounded King 63-26, including 20 offensive rebounds. Wofford totaled 21 second chance points and scored 30 points inside the paint.
Courtney Swider paced the team with eight rebounds.
Maddie Heiss,
Gabby Mundy, and
Sophia Rueppell dished out three assists each.
Brady Branam had a team-high two steals.
King scored the first bucket of the game, but Wofford responded with six-straight points to regain the lead, 6-2. The six points were the start of a 13-3 run for the Terriers as the team took control early on. Wofford would hold King scoreless for the final five minutes of the frame, taking a 24-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
A three-pointer from
Abby Eller got the scoring started for Wofford in the second quarter, as the team took a 27-7 lead.
Madi Hawk added five-straight points after that, extending the run to eight points.
Maddie Heiss nailed a jump shot before King scored its first points of the second quarter with 5:26 left in the stanza. Junior guard
Sara Deidda saw her first minutes of the season, knocking in a free throw late in the quarter. Wofford would hold a 46-15 advantage entering the half.
King got on the board first to open the half, but
Maddie Heiss answered with a three-pointer the next trip down the court. Wofford would hold King without a field goal for the next three minutes of action, furthering the team's lead to 35 points, 54-19. The Terriers controlled a 67-31 lead at the end of the third quarter.
A layup from
Queen Ikhiuwu got the scoring started in the final frame. Ikhiuwu scored eight points within the first three minutes of the fourth quarter.
Courtney Swider and
Sophia Rueppell each added a three-pointer following the Ikhiuwu run.
Sara Deidda scored the first field goal of her season with just under five minutes of action left in the contest. The Terriers would go on to win 92-42.
Wofford will be back in action on December 28 as the team will travel to Georgia Tech. The Terriers will then host Southern Wesleyan University on January 1 before starting Southern Conference play on January 8 at Chattanooga.
