Wofford Men’s Basketball Secures Road Win After Week-Long Break

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team bounced back into the win column against the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs on Monday evening by an 83-57 margin.

The Terriers (7-4) were led by Kahmare Holmes' 15 points, followed closely by Cayden Vasko's 13 points. Holmes also led the team in rebounds (9). Vasko led in assists (5) and steals (3). Brian Sumpter had two blocks.

"It was good to see our guys have their mojo back and have some laughter," said head coach Kevin Giltner. "Everyone felt poorly about Elon, so it was good to see people laugh."

How It Happened
Brian Sumpter opened the scoring for the Terriers with a put-back attempt. It took a few possessions later, but Cayden Vasko hit a three-pointer, following it up with a second-chance layup. This sparked the Wofford offense as they went on a 15-4 run going into the first media timeout at the 11:42 mark. Chace Watley became an early leader, scoring six during the first ten minutes of the game.

Wofford scored the next six points coming out of the timeout, grabbing their first double-digit lead of the game. It took the Terriers four minutes to grab their next bucket, allowing the Runnin' Bulldogs to get six points back. Scoring slowed after Kahmare Holmes' second-chance layup, with only five points being scored. Both teams combined to go 2-of-9 from the field over three minutes.

Luke Flynn got the scoring pace going again with a corner three-pointer, followed by a layup from Nils Machowski. Gardner-Webb responded with seven straight points to prevent a double-digit deficit going into the locker rooms. Wofford held the lead, 34-27, with the Terriers showing 40 percent from behind the arc at the break.
Sumpter opened scoring in the second half as well, finding his own rebound. He was able to convert from the free throw line on the next possession to give the Terriers their double-digit lead back. Holmes was able to double his first-half field goals in the first four minutes of the second frame, looking to pick things up after a slow start for the Terriers' leading scorer.

Chace Watley scored the next four points to be the first Terrier to reach ten points on the night. Jayden Tyler and Vasko hit threes on back-to-back possessions to drive the game to its largest margin at the time, with Wofford leading by 17 points. GWU went on to grab three baskets before the Terriers could grab their next, with Vasko stealing the ball and dunking on a fast break. Wofford's offense got on a roll, going on an 8-2 run before Gardner-Webb called their first timeout of the half.

The stoppage slowed the momentum of the game, with only nine points scored over the next four minutes. A series of technical fouls were called on, first, Kahmare Holmes, followed by a GWU player. Holmes went one for two on the ensuing free throws. The teams traded two scores each, heading into the final four minutes with Wofford leading, 76-52. Rex Stirling converted back-to-back second-chance layups to push Wofford over a 25-point lead. The Terriers used as much clock as they could for the remainder of the game and the final whistle blew with the 83-57 score.
