Wofford Men’s Basketball Downs The Blue Hose In Midweek Matchup

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Wofford men's basketball team beat the Presbyterian Blue Hose on Wednesday night in a gritty, 63-56, win.

The Terriers (6-3) were led by Nils Machowski and Kahmare Holmes' 16 points. Chace Watley had a career-high nine rebounds, nearly missing out on a double-double with nine points as well. Cayden Vasko and Machoswki had two assists each, while Brian Sumpter had two blocks.

"These guys are not one-dimensional," said head coach Kevin Giltner. "I love these guys because they are playing versatile basketball."

How It Happened
The Terriers got on the board first with a driving lay-up by Cayden Vasko, who added a three on his first attempt shortly after. Presbyterian held a slight lead coming out of the first media timeout, but Wofford pushed back in the next portion of the game, forcing two turnovers, to regain the lead. It would not last long, as a PC three put them up by one at 12-11 with 12:55 on the clock.

Their three would help start a 7-0 run for the Blue Hose, before Chace Watley could stunt their momentum with a three. Neither team could score for two minutes before Vasko grabbed an offensive board and made a shot from behind the arc to give Wofford the lead again at 17-16 with eight minutes remaining.

These points were the start of a 17-2 run. The Blue Hose were only able to grab one basket and two free throws in between the eight-minute and four-minute timeouts. The Terriers led, 28-20, heading into the final three minutes of the game. Neither team was able to score in the remaining two minutes as the half would end with Wofford leading, 31-22, led by ten points from Vasko.

Kahmare Holmes opened the scoring in the second half, converting 1-of-2 from the line for a ten-point lead. The teams traded scores for most of the opening phase of the half. Wofford pushed the lead to ten again with a dunk by Kahmare Holmes for a 38-28 advantage. A three pointer by Chace Watley gave Wofford a 44-32 lead with 12:56 on the clock. The Terriers hit a dry spell, failing to score for nearly five minutes. Presbyterian went on a 9-0 run to make it a 44-42 game.

Nils Machowski would end the drought, followed by a Holmes corner three. PC fought back, cutting the lead back to three points, but Luke Flynn would hit a shot from behind the arc to keep a gap between the teams. With only two minutes left in the game, the Terriers held on to a 55-49 lead. Presbyterian had a two and then stole the ball and hit a crucial three-point attempt to bring the game to one point at 55-44, but Nils Machoswki drove to the basket, drawing a foul on the way. With both teams in the bonus with under ten seconds left, Machowski and Holmes were both fouled and went 4-of-4 from the line for the 63-56 final score.
