SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's basketball team defeated the Charleston Southern Buccaneers 70-42 on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium. The Terriers saw four players reach double-digits in the victory, as
Queen Ikhiuwu scored a team-high 17 points.
"Charleston Southern is a well-coached team," said head coach
Jimmy Garrity. "Our defense was just outstanding to hold them to 42 points. We have multiple players throughout the roster that can have big nights, and they showed that tonight."
Wofford improves to 4-5 while Charleston Southern falls to 2-7. The Terriers earn back-to-back wins over Big South opponents with the victory, as the team defeated Gardner-Webb on Thursday night.
The Terriers finished the afternoon shooting 29-of-65 (44.6%) from the field and made seven of their 26 attempts from deep. Charleston Southern closed the afternoon shooting 14-of-56 (25%) from the field and knocked down eight threes on 33 tries. Wofford converted five of its six attempts from the charity stripe.
Queen Ikhiuwu led the team with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting while
Maddie Heiss followed behind with a season-high 16 points.
Gabby Mundy tallied 11 markers, and
Toni Warren had 10. Mundy also led the team with four assists and zero turnovers.
Wofford outrebounded Charleston Southern 43-to-32, including 10 offensive boards. The Terriers scored 32 points in the paint compared to eight from the Buccaneers.
Maddie Heiss was just short of her second double-double of the year, pulling down nine rebounds.
Queen Ikhiuwu followed behind with seven, and
Toni Warren recorded six.
The Terriers committed a season-low six turnovers on the day – 12 was the low coming into the day. That is the fewest turnovers in a game since the team committed five against UNCG (3/8/24).
A layup by
Molly Masingale on the first possession of the game kickstarted an 8-0 run for the Terriers, but Charleston Southern responded with five-straight points to cut the deficit to three points. Five more points from
Maddie Heiss gave Wofford a 13-7 lead with 4:25 left in the opening frame. The Terriers would fall into a drought, however, not scoring for the remainder of the quarter. Wofford would head into the second quarter trailing 14-13.
A 7-0 run from
Queen Ikhiuwu to start the second stanza allowed Wofford to regain the lead, 20-14. Charleston Southern did not get on the board until the 6:48 mark, as a Buccaneer three-pointer was one of two baskets the team scored in the quarter. The Terriers controlled the frame, outscoring Charleston Southern 20-6. Wofford would head into the break leading 33-20 after holding the Buccaneers to just 2-of-14 shooting in the quarter.
Gabby Mundy opened the second half with a scoop layup, but Charleston Southern responded with a pair of free throws on the other end. Mundy totaled six points in the first three minutes of the second half as the Terriers extended their lead to 44-24 with 7:12 remaining in the quarter. Wofford would take its largest lead of the game, 56-30, at the close of the third quarter.
A bucket from
Maddie Heiss to start the final frame gave Wofford a 28-point lead. The Terriers would lead by as many as 34 points, 70-36, after triples from both
Elli Porter and
Courtney Swider. Wofford went on to earn its second-straight victory, 70-42, against Charleston Southern.
Wofford held Charleston Southern to just eight made field goals in the final three quarters. The 14 field goals from Charleston Southern are the lowest for the team all season.
The Terriers will take a week's break for exams before heading to Mississippi to take on No. 13 Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon. The 1:00 p.m. ET tip-off will mark the first time the two teams have faced off in program history.
