SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's lacrosse team was defeated 24-14 by San Diego State University on a windy Sunday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Aztecs had a 7-5 lead after the first quarter and built on the advantage over the next three quarters for the final margin.
Wofford (0-2) was led by
Bria Foley with three goals and two assists for five points.
Carley Irvin had three goals, while
Emma Stalteri,
Carlie Cutinella, and
Ainsley Towle had two goals each.
Bria Foley also led the team with ten draw controls, with
Barrett Rowe picking up a team-high six ground balls.
The Terriers caused six turnovers, including two by
Laney Reh. The teams combined for 73 shots in the game, with the Aztecs holding a 50-23 advantage.
Ella Smithers had 15 saves in goal, tied for the fourth-most in school history.
To start the game, the Terriers got on the board first with a goal by
Ainsley Towle. The Aztecs responded with a pair of goals before the game was tied at 2-2 after another goal by Towle. After two more goals by San Diego State, goals by
Emma Stalteri and
Bria Foley tied the game at 4-4 with 6:21 left in the quarter. Over the final six minutes, the Aztecs scored three goals to one for the Terriers by
Carley Irvin for a 7-5 lead.
In the second quarter,
Bria Foley and
Carlie Cutinella matched a pair of goals by the Aztecs to make it an 8-6 game. San Diego State then scored four straight goals, three of which were scored on a man-up advantage due to a Wofford red card, as they extended the lead to 13-7.
Carlie Cutinella got one goal back for the Terriers with a minute remaining before halftime for a 13-8 score at the break.
The Aztecs came out in the third quarter with three straight goals. The teams then traded goals, as
Ella Bartlett and
Carley Irvin scored for the Terrier as the lead was 18-10 with 2:33 left in the quarter.
Izzy Woods scored her first career goal with under a minute left on a free position shot.
Carley Irvin opened the fourth quarter with a goal for an 18-12 game. Over the final 14 minutes, Wofford had a goal by
Emma Stalteri and
McKenzie Moeller scored her first career goal but the Aztecs added six goals for the 24-14 final score.
San Diego State is now 4-0 on the season. They were led by Nikki Seven with five goals and four assists for nine points.
Wofford will remain at home next Sunday, Feb. 23, when they host Coastal Carolina at noon.
