SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On Sunday afternoon, the Wofford women's lacrosse team was defeated 20-13 by Coastal Carolina University at Gibbs Stadium. The Terriers scored first but trailed 10-6 at halftime and were outscored by the Chanticleers 10-7 in the second half.
Wofford was led by
Bria Foley with four goals and three assists for seven points.
Carlie Cutinella added three goals and an assist, while leading the team with seven draw controls.
Carley Irvin had two goals and two assists.
Emma Stalteri scored twice and
Izzy Woods scored one goal.
Six different Terriers forced a turnover as the team had a six to five advantage in caused turnovers. Wofford also had a 15 to 11 advantage in ground balls, with
Barrett Rowe and
Ella Bartlett each with a team-high three.
The teams combined for 72 shots in the game, with the Chanticleers holding a 43-29 advantage.
Ella Smithers and
Hannah Taylor each played a half in goal for the Terriers, with both coming up with three saves each.
After a scoreless first four minutes of the game,
Olivia Graebner scored with an assist by
Carley Irvin for an early 1-0 lead for the Terriers. Coastal Carolina tied it at 1-1 just 45 seconds later, but Wofford answered with a goal by
Carlie Cutinella for a 2-1 lead. The Chanticleers scored the next four goals for a 5-2 lead before
Carley Irvin scored. Down 6-3,
Bria Foley had an unassisted goal with one minute left in the opening quarter for a 6-4 score.
Coastal Carolina scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 9-4 lead. Wofford responded with back-to-back goals from
Bria Foley and
Carlie Cutinella to cut the advantage to 9-6, but the Chanticleers scored with three seconds left in the half to take a 10-6 lead at the break.
Emma Stalteri opened the scoring in the second half with a free position goal for a 10-7 margin. The teams traded scores, with Wofford responding to each goal by Coastal Carolina as the lead was 14-11 after three quarters. The Terriers scored first in the fourth quarter when
Bria Foley had a free position goal. The Chanticleers pulled away with five straight goals in a five-minute span to push the lead to 19-12.
Izzy Woods added a goal for the Terriers with 2:15 remaining before a goal in the final minute by Coastal Carolina provided the 20-13 final margin.
Coastal Carolina, who earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2024, is now 3-2 on the season. They were led by Brigid Cardillo with ten points on one goal and nine assists. Maddie Bates added seven goals.
Wofford (0-3) will visit Campbell on Wednesday, February 26, for the first road contest of the season.
