SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team put up the first two runs of the ballgame Tuesday night at Russell C. King Field, but Charlotte scored four unanswered from there to claim a 4-2 win. The Terriers drop to 3-1 as the 49ers improve to 2-1.
Â
Sheldon Egger (0-1) made his Terrier debut and suffered the loss after surrendering three runs in 4.2 innings of work. He allowed five hits but struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Kenny Michaels allowed one run in his 1.1 innings of work out of the bullpen, and
Champ Davis tossed the final 3.0 frames with three punchouts to no hits, runs, or walks.
Â
Charlotte utilized five arms in total with the third, AJ Camp (1-0), taking the win. He pitched 2.1 innings with no runs allowed and four strikeouts. Joseph Taylor (2) earned the save after finishing the final 2.0 innings with no runs or hits.
Â
Wofford was out hit 9-5, and the strikeout bit the Terriers this evening as Wofford suffered 12 of them. Terrier pitching dished out nine punchouts, however.
Â
Hunter Herndon and
David Wiley led the way for Wofford with two hits each.
Logan Tribble added one with a pinch-hit bunt single.
Ben Timblin reached base twice with a walk and hit by pitch, adding an RBI.
Harrison Campi also brought home a run with his walk.
Â
Pitching opened the game in control for both teams as each of the first two frames were scoreless. Wofford broke through in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs. With the bases loaded,
Ben Timblin wore a pitch inside to plate the game's first run. After a pitching change and strikeout,
Harrison Campi worked a two-out walk to push across another run for the early 2-0 advantage.
Â
The fourth was another quiet inning as
Sheldon Egger doled out his third consecutive 1-2-3 frame. However, Charlotte found a rhythm in the top of the fifth. A two-run home run tied the contest, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch pushed across the go-ahead run for the 49ers, who led 3-2.
Â
The Terriers looked to respond in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases. This was aided by
Logan Tribble's two-out, pinch-hit bunt single. However, an untimely strikeout ended the threat.
Â
An RBI single in the top of the sixth added an insurance run for Charlotte, pushing the margin to 4-2.
Â
The 49er bullpen would hold firm from there. The Terriers were unable to piece together a comeback and ultimately fell 4-2 to Charlotte.
Â
Wofford remains home this weekend for a three-game slate against Army West Point. The Terriers open the set on Friday, February 21, at 5:30 p.m. looking to bounce back.
