Baseball Wins Behind Campi’s Walk-Off Single

Terriers topple Army West Point 4-3 in pitchers’ duel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – On a cold Friday evening at Russell C. King Field, Wofford and Army West Point were locked in a back-and-forth pitchers' duel. However, the Terriers prevailed 4-3 thanks to a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth by Harrison Campi. Wofford improves to 4-1 as Army drops to 1-3.

Both teams only used two pitchers. Branton Little started for Wofford, tossing a career-high 6.1 innings with just two runs allowed on four hits and one walk. He struck out three. Carter Rasmussen (2-0) picked up the win in relief, finishing off the final 2.2 innings. He surrendered just one run on one hit and one walk. He also tallied three punchouts.

"I'm really proud. I thought those two did a good job of executing the game plan well," said associate head coach Pat Brown. "We talked about being aggressive and making them earn everything they got, and I thought we did that well tonight."

Trey Ates (0-1) took the loss in relief for Army after allowing two runs in his 2.2 innings of work. He followed a strong start by Justin Lehman, who pitched the first 6.0 frames.

The Terriers outhit the Black Knights, 10-5, and worked four more walks, 6-2. Adam Haber and Harrison Campi led the way with three hits apiece. They each reached base four times by adding a walk. Campi tallied an RBI with his walk-off single, his first-career walk-off play. Ryan Wynn added a two-hit outing. Hunter Herndon, Logan Tribble, and James Layman all added an RBI.

"We're just trying to get runners on and move them in," said Haber of the pitchers' duel. "Hats off to our pitchers – just a great performance by them."

Wofford got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first. With runners on second and third, Logan Tribble lifted a sacrifice fly to push across Hunter Herndon for the early 1-0 lead.

Army responded in the top of the second with an RBI single to pull level at 1-1.

In the bottom of the third, the Terriers punched back to regain the lead. With a runner on third, Herndon's RBI groundout pushed Wofford back in front, 2-1.

The Black Knights countered with their own RBI groundout in the top of the fourth to tie the score again at 2-2.

Pitching settled in from there for both teams with four consecutive scoreless innings. The Terriers broke back through in the bottom of the eighth. Singles by Adam Haber and Harrison Campi put two runners on, and Tyler Bak's walk loaded the bases. James Layman came in to pinch hit, and the patient lefty worked a walk to plate a run and send Wofford to the ninth up 3-2.

However, the pendulum swung once more as Army countered with an RBI single in the top of the ninth. The score was level at 3-3 as Wofford looked to walk things off in the bottom of the ninth.

Herndon opened the frame with an infield single, and Niko Brini came on to pinch run. A groundout moved him to second, setting up an intentional walk of Haber. A flyout allowed Brini to move over to third, 90 feet from victory. This set up Campi, who dropped a ball down the right field line, bringing Brini home for the 4-3 walk-off winner.

"I was just trying to do my one-ninth," said Campi of his walk-off single. "J.J. [Edwards] was saying to go up there and be late, just drop a ball in the other way. So I was just trying to do my job. Branton [Little] did a great job keeping us in it at first, and (Carter Rasmussen) came in and shut it down."

The Terriers will face Army again tomorrow in game two of the series, which is set for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch at Russell C. King Field.
