Wofford Drops Late Inning Affair Against Northern Iowa

Spartanburg, S.C. - Wofford softball (11-4) lost an extra inning battle against Northern Iowa (7-3) by an 8-5 score after nine innings of softball at Hope Field on Tuesday, February 25.

Abby Greenwood got the start in the circle against the Panthers and went three innings with two runs surrendered and was replaced by Natalya Salo. Salo went 5.1 innings and gave up five runs on eight hits and had the unfortunate conclusion of receiving the loss to drop her record to 3-1 on the season. The game was closed out by Tayven Stephenson, who gave up one run in a third of an inning pitched. The Terrier defense did not do the pitching staff any favors tonight as they committed four errors, including two in the bottom of the ninth, that would lead to the eventual loss.

The scoring was opened up by the Panthers, who hit a solo shot off Abby Greenwood in the top of the third inning. The Terriers responded in the bottom half of the inning with a Rivers Sampson RBI single. Northern Iowa would strike again in the next inning with another home run, this time a 2-run shot, to put the Panthers up 3-1.

However, the Terriers again would find an answer in the bottom half of the frame. First, with an Abby Gossett RBI sacrifice fly and then with an Abbi Campbell RBI single to knot up the score at 3-3. Both teams' offenses would remain dormant until the top of the eighth inning, when Nothern Iowa would score on a sacrifice fly. The Terriers would clutch up in the bottom of the inning with a Havalynn Abernathy RBI single tying the score at four apiece going into the ninth. In the ninth inning, the Terriers ran out of gas as they gave up four runs that they could not come back from. An Abbi Campbell fielder's choice RBI was all Wofford could muster in the bottom of the ninth for the 8-5 final margin.

Wofford will return to action Thursday, February 27, to host the University of North Dakota at Hope Field. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
