Wofford Earns 13-6 Midweek Road Win Over Davidson

Sills shines out of the bullpen as Bak and Herndon lift homers

DAVIDSON, N.C. – With the game tied at three entering the fourth, Tyler Bak delivered his first-career home run for Wofford to push the Terriers in front for a lead they would not relinquish. Michael Sills stunned with 4.2 scoreless innings out the bullpen to help secure Wofford's 13-6 victory over Davidson at Wilson Field Wednesday evening. Wofford improves to 8-1 as the Wildcats dip to 2-5.

The Terriers used four pitchers in the contest with Mason Compton earning the starting nod. He tossed 2.0 innings with three runs allowed alongside three strikeouts. John Gray tossed 1.1 innings with three punchouts before turning the ball over to Michael Sills (1-0), who turned in a career outing to earn the win. The senior delivered a career-high 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball with just one hit allowed, striking out a career-best seven batters. Wes Estes struck out the side in the ninth with just a single hit blemishing his line to secure the win.

"It's really easy to go out there when you trust the guys on your defense," said Sills of his outing. "We got a lot of guys out there who will go all out and make all the plays, so I knew that if I threw strikes I had my guys behind me."

Davidson used nine arms in the game with the third pitcher, Brycen Champey (0-3), suffering the loss after allowing a run, Bak's solo homer, in 1.1 innings of work.

The Wofford offense rolled with 12 hits and six walks drawn. With five hit batters, the Terriers were benefitted by 11 total free baserunners. Four Terriers collected two hits: Harrison Campi, Adam Haber, Tyler Bak, and James Layman. Campi collected a career-high three RBI with Haber adding a pair. Campi roped his first triple with Ryan Wynn, Haber, and Andrew Mannelly hitting a double each. Tyler Bak clubbed his first-career homer in the contest, and Hunter Herndon also went deep for his first long ball as a Terrier.

Wofford applied pressure on the bases, stealing five in the game. Wynn, David Wiley, Ben Timblin, Ethan Belk, and Niko Brini each collected a swipe.

Davidson struck first in the bottom of the first, utilizing an RBI double for the quick 1-0 edge.

The Terriers pulled level in the top of the second. After a single and a fielder's choice, Wofford had a runner on first with one out. Tyler Bak worked a walk to put two aboard, and a grounder to short seemed to be a tailor-made double play to end the inning. However, an errant throw to first allowed Hunter Herndon to score and even the game at 1-1.

The Wildcats pulled back in front with two runs in the bottom of the frame. An RBI double and RBI single pushed Davidson back ahead, 3-1.

The pendulum continued to swing in the top of the third as Wofford pulled even again. James Layman and Ryan Wynn opened the frame with a single and double, respectively. Harrison Campi's sacrifice fly pushed Layman home, and David Wiley's RBI groundout scored Wynn, pulling the score to 3-3.

In the top of the fourth, Wofford plated three to pull in front. Bak led the frame off with his first-career home run, a solo shot that went 374 feet the opposite way. After a single and hit-by-pitch, Campi delivered a triple over the right fielder's head to bring in both runners and make the score 6-3.

Davidson scored three to tie the game once more in the bottom of the fourth. A two-run double was followed by a bases-loaded wild pitch to pull the score level at 6-all. With two runners on, Michael Sills came out of the bullpen and limited the damage with back-to-back punchouts.

Wofford wasted no time reclaiming the lead. Herndon delivered a lead-off 380-foot solo homer to push the Terriers up 7-6.

In the top of the sixth, Wofford tacked on two more runs. After Campi and Wiley knocked back-to-back singles, an error two batters later allowed both runners to race home for the 9-6 margin.

Ryan Wynn lifted a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to add another run for a 10-6 lead.

After a scoreless eighth, Wofford added three insurance runs in the ninth. Wofford executed a double steal, and a throwing error on the play brought Niki Brini home. Later in the frame, Adam Haber roped a double to center that scored a pair, making the score 13-6.

The margin would stay there as in the bottom of the frame, Wes Estes came out of the bullpen for his collegiate debut. The freshman struck out the first batter he faced before allowing a single. That would be all Davidson got, as Estes settled in and punched out the next two hitters to secure the 13-6 triumph.

Wofford returns home this weekend to host a three-game series against Le Moyne. Game one against the Dolphins is Friday, February 28, with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m. at Russell C. King Field.
