SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford men's basketball team (12-12, 6-5) fell to the Chattanooga Mocs (16-8, 8-3) 79-70 at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium on Wednesday night. The Terriers led by two at the half but could not hold on, resulting in their fifth conference loss of the season.
The Terriers were outshot on the night, as Chattanooga finished the night shooting 53.7 percent (29-54) from the floor but only hit five threes at a 23.8 percent rate. Wofford shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field and hit eight threes on the night. Tripp also led the team with three helpers. Turnovers were an issue for Wofford, committing 14 turnovers compared to four from the Mocs.
Wofford was led by two double-digit scorers with
Corey Tripp pacing the team at 20 points. The senior guard was 6-of-7 at the charity stripe while hitting two threes as well.
Dillon Bailey followed behind with his tenth-straight game in double-digits after scoring 13 points.
The Terriers outrebounded Chattanooga 37-25, including 15 offensive rebounds.
Jeremy Lorenz led the team as the sophomore forward pulled down eight rebounds.
Jackson Sivills followed behind with six.
Chattanooga jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first couple of minutes, but
Jackson Sivills put the team on the board after a nice take to the basket. A Mocs three-pointer on the other end furthered the advantage to seven. The Terriers would trail by five points heading into the first media timeout.
Coming out of the break, Wofford hit three-straight triples to take its first lead of the game, 17-16, with 10:54 left in the first stanza. Chattanooga scored after burning a timeout, but
Corey Tripp kept the barrage from deep going after sinking his first triple of the game. Despite a couple of lead changes in the closing minutes of the half, Wofford was able to head into the break leading 37-35 after a layup from
Corey Tripp on the Terriers' final possession.
Chattanooga opened the second half with a 14-4 run to take an eight-point lead with 15:26 remaining in the contest. The Terriers stayed within striking distance over the next several minutes, but the Mocs pushed their lead out to 16 points in the final four minutes of action. Wofford cut it to seven with 59 seconds remaining, however, Chattanooga was able to convert on its free throw attempts down the stretch, ultimately sealing the game. The Terriers suffered a 79-70 setback in what was the team's fifth conference loss of the season.
Wofford will have two-straight road games as the team will travel to Macon, Georgia, to take on Mercer at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 8. The Terriers will then go to The Citadel for a midweek matchup with the Bulldogs in Charleston on Wednesday, February 12.
