Terriers Take One of Two on Opening Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford softball team (1-1) fell to the Dayton Flyers (2-0) in the first game but came back to win in the second game against the Towson Tigers (0-2) in the Terrier Invite at Hope Field. Freshman Brianna Stanley walked the second game off in her second ever start.

Game 1

Sophomore Abby Greenwood was given the nod to start the first game of the 2025 season. However, she was beset by the high-powered Dayton offense early, scoring one run in the first two innings of work. The Wofford Terriers would strike back in the third with a triple by Havalynn Abernathy, which scored freshman Rivers Sampson. Freshman Brianna Stanley drove in Abernathy the following at bat tying the ballgame at two. The Dayton offense would respond with three runs in the next two innings. Greenwood's day would end after five innings of work but would be picked up by freshman pitcher Natalya Salo, who would go on to close out the game with no further runs given up. The Terriers would attempt to come back in the bottom of the seventh, but after a sac fly from Kate Platte, the Flyers would shut the door, which ended the game 6-3 in favor of Dayton.

Game 2

Junior hurler Margaret Axelson got the start in game two against the Towson Tigers. She proceeded to pick up right where she left off from last season. She tossed a complete game with only three runs given up with seven strikeouts. The offense would grab the early lead with another Abernathy RBI and a Brianna Stanley sac fly, which made it 2-0. Abernathy would again single and secure another RBI, her third of the day, to extend Wofford's lead in the third. Towson made it interesting in the sixth inning however, scoring three runs before the Terrier defense could stop the bleeding. The score remained knotted at three in the bottom of seventh, with senior Hannah Maddox reaching on a fielder's choice. She stole second base before freshman Brianna Stanley would drive her home with a hit in the gap to seal the walk-off 4-3 victory for the Terriers.

Wofford will stay at home to conclude the round robin portion of the Terrier Invite as the Terriers face Youngstown State at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow. Wofford will then play later in the day under the seeded portion of the event.
