SPARTANBURG, S.C.- The Wofford softball team (4-1) took down the defending A10 champion Dayton Flyers (4-1) 4-2 at Hope Field Sunday morning. Brianna Stanley and Havalynn Abernathy homered to propel Wofford to victory.
Junior pitcher Margaret Axelson got the start and earned her second win of the season with a complete game, four strikeout day. She only gave up four hits in the Terrier Invite championship as she out-dueled Dayton ace Izzy Kemp.
The Dayton offense got after Axelson early with two runs in the first inning, but that was all the Flyers could muster throughout the rest of the day. The Terrier offense would respond in the bottom of the first with a Brianna Stanley home run to the left center gap. That home run was the first of her career and would cut the lead to 2-1. The Terriers would again strike in the third with an Abbi Campbell triple followed up by a passed ball on the Dayton catcher, allowing the speedy outfielder to score to knot up the game 2-2.
The Terrier offense would reman dormant until the sixth frame, when Dayton changed out pitchers. The new Dayton hurler delivered a first pitch fastball to Havalynn Abernathy who proceeded to homer over the right field fence, giving Wofford the lead. Abbi Campbell would add to the lead with another triple that scored Gracie Parker from second, making the game 4-2 at the end of sixth. Axelson finished off the Flyers in the seventh to secure Wofford's fourth straight victory, tied for the longest in program history, and secure the Terrier Invite championship.
Wofford softball will return to action Friday, February 14, as they travel to DeLand, Florida, for the first road contests of the season. They take on Bethune-Cookman at 9:30 a.m. and Stetson University at 3:00 p.m.
