SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the season opener, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated 14-10 by Old Dominion University on Sunday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. The Monarchs had a 9-3 lead after two quarters, but despite a strong fourth quarter the Terriers could not overcome the advantage.
Wofford (0-1) was led by
Bria Foley with four goals and an assist for five points.
Carlie Cutinella added three goals, with
Emma Stalteri,
Carley Irvin, and
Ella Bartlett each scoring a goal.
Vivian Chiomento had a team-high six draw controls. Wofford had a 36 to 21 advantage in shots in the game.
The Terriers had 27 ground balls to only 13 for the Monarchs, with
Brooke Meltcher and
Ella Davis each with a team-high five. Wofford also had a 13 to 8 advantage in caused turnovers, with
Brooke Meltcher leading the squad with three. Goalkeeper
Ella Smithers had three saves and
Hannah Taylor saw her first career minutes in the cage.
In the opening quarter, the Monarchs took an early 2-0 lead. Wofford answered with a man-up goal by
Carley Irvin assisted by
Bria Foley and tied the game on an unassisted goal by
Emma Stalteri at the 11:15 mark. Old Dominion answered with four straight goals as they took a 6-2 advantage at 13:18 in the second quarter. Five minutes later,
Bria Foley scored an unassisted goal for a 6-3 margin. The Monarchs scored three more goals as they took a 9-3 lead at the break.
After a quick man-up goal by the Monarchs at the start of the third quarter, Wofford added an unassisted goal by
Bria Foley at the 9:41 mark. Old Dominion added two more goals before Foley got the Terriers back on the board with 3:39 left in the quarter. Trailing 13-5 heading into the fourth quarter, the Terriers responded with four straight goals as
Bria Foley scored once and
Carlie Cutinella added three goals to make it a 13-9 game with 5:49 remaining on the clock. The Monarchs added one more goal before a free position goal by
Ella Bartlett with 2:21 remaining provided the 14-10 final result.
Old Dominion is 2-0 on the season. They were led by Megan Hopfensper with three goals and an assist for four points and Callie Culhane with three goals. The Terriers are now 2-6 overall in season openers and also 2-6 in home openers.
Wofford will remain at home next Sunday when they host San Diego State at noon.
