Wofford Softball Splits Final Day of Wofford Invitational

Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford softball (14-6) split two games on Saturday with a loss to Tennessee State 5-4 in eight innings and then a win against North Dakota 2-1 at Hope Field. The win over North Dakota was Wofford's fourth walk-off victory of the season. The games were the final two for the Terriers in the Wofford Invitational.

Game 1

The Terriers took the 6-5 loss over Tennessee State (6-5) in extra innings. Wofford is currently 0-4 in extra-inning games on the season. Ace Margaret Axelson got the circle to start the contest and proceeded to go eight innings with 130 pitches thrown. She allowed seven hits on eight strikeouts. The Tigers struck early scoring two runs both in the first and the third innings to put the Terriers in a 4-0 hole.

Havalynn Abernathy cut into the lead with a solo shot, her third of the campaign, to start the fifth inning. Pinch hitter Abby Gossett then drove in an RBI to whittle down the margin to 4-2. Wofford continued the offensive push in the bottom of the sixth, with a Hope Ingle double to drive in pinch runner Desirae Devine and a Gracie Parker RBI single would tie the game up 4-4 to send the game into extras. In the eighth, Axelson began to wear down as the Tigers took a two-run lead on a single and Wofford did not have enough to complete the comeback, only answering with one run in the bottom of the eighth to end the game 6-5.

Game 2

Abby Greenwood and the Wofford defense shut down the North Dakota (8-10) bats enroute to a 2-1 walk-off win.

Abby Greenwood started in game two of the day against North Dakota, going the complete game with only three hits and a single run given up. She also broke Wofford softball's single game strikeout record with 11 punch outs to get the win.

"The game felt fun today," said pitcher Abby Greenwood on her performance. "It's the game I grew up playing and that made all the difference tonight."

The Terrier bats woke up in the first inning with a Brianna Stanley RBI to give Wofford the early 1-0 lead. The Fighting Hawks answered in the third with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one apiece. A pitching duel ensued until the bottom of the seventh when a wild pitch by North Dakota allowed Havalynn Abernathy to score the game-winning run to give Wofford the 2-1.

Wofford will return to Hope Field on Wednesday, March 5, as they take on the College of Charleston on ESPN+. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
