ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Wofford baseball team plated five runs over the first five frames Tuesday evening at Greenwood Baseball Field and never looked back, holding firm late for a 5-2 victory over UNC Asheville. The Terriers improve to 15-6 on the season as the Bulldogs fall to 9-12.
Â
Four Terriers toed the rubber with
Sheldon Egger starting. He hurled 4.0 shutout innings with just one hit and one walk allowed alongside three punchouts. His first 3.1 innings were hitless.
Michael Sills (2-2) earned the win as the first pitcher out of the bullpen. He tossed 3.0 innings with no runs allowed on two hits, one walk, and one strikeout.
Alec Bouchard polished off the final 2.0 innings. He gave up two runs on four hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Â
"I was just feeling confident," said Egger of his dominant outing. "I was able to get the ball down, get in there. I was able to fill it up, and [Zach] Porter did a good job behind the plate."
Â
Asheville starter Nic Melton (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Â
Seven Terriers notched a hit in the contest as Wofford outhit Asheville 11-7. Three totaled multiple knocks, powered by
David Wiley's trio of extra-base hits. He had a two-run homer alongside a pair of doubles to contribute to a team-high three RBI.
James Layman and
Niko Brini each notched two hits. Layman had a double, and Brini notched an RBI, as did
Hunter Herndon.
Â
Brini recorded four stolen bases, a new career high and the most by a Terrier in over a year. The last Terrier to notch four swipes in a game was
Marshall Toole, who recorded a quartet last season on February 25 against FDU.
Adam Haber and
Tanner Hardin each added a steal to mark six total for the Terriers.
Â
"It's good when we have a Tuesday where our offense can come out and slam the ball around the yard, get on base, and be productive," said Wiley. "We work really hard on Mondays so that it shows up on the field on Tuesday."
Â
Wofford wasted no time getting on the board.
Ryan Wynn got on to lead off the game when the Asheville second baseman committed a fielding error. A batter later,
David Wiley roped a double over the left fielder's head to bring Wynn home for the quick 1-0 edge.
Â
The Terriers tacked another run on in the top of the second with aggressive small ball.
James Layman ripped a two-out double to right center, setting up
Niko Brini. The junior put down a perfect bunt, safely beating it out at first as Layman never slowed rounding third, racing home for a 2-0 lead.
Â
The lead doubled in the top of the third.
Adam Haber singled and stole second, but the steal would prove unneeded as Wiley promptly clubbed a no-doubt homer over the left field wall to stretch the Terrier advantage to 4-0.
Â
Wofford stretched its lead in the top of the fifth with another run. Haber walked, and Wiley's double pushed Haber to third.
Hunter Herndon lifted a sacrifice fly to left that plated Haber and lifted the Terrier lead to 5-0.
Â
Terrier pitching continued to dominate as the Bulldog staff settled in from there. Both teams were scoreless for two consecutive innings until Asheville cracked through in the bottom of the eighth with a solo homer, chipping away to a 5-1 margin.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs continued to apply pressure for a comeback, recording an RBI single. However,
Alec Bouchard held firm to strand a pair and seal the 5-2 Terrier triumph.
Â
Wofford returns to the Palmetto State tomorrow for another midweek battle, facing USC Upstate at Fluor Field. First pitch against the Spartans is set for 6:00 p.m. in Greenville, and the contest can be streamed on ESPN+.
