SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Locked in a tight battle Sunday afternoon, the Wofford baseball team remained resilient to earn an 11-8 triumph at Russell C. King Field over the Le Moyne Dolphins. Wofford improves to 11-1 on the season with the sweep as Le Moyne drops to 0-10.
Â
The sweep is Wofford's third in a row to begin the campaign. The Terriers have now won eight-straight contests.
Â
Kenny Michaels (2-0) earned the win for Wofford as the first reliever out of the bullpen, tossing 3.0 innings with just two runs allowed on two hits and one walk. He struck out five.
Dylan Rhadans started for Wofford and pitched 4.0 frames, recording a career-high eight punchouts. After Michaels,
Champ Davis (2) shut the door by hurling 2.0 scoreless innings for the save. He surrendered just one hit and struck out three. In all, the Terrier trio struck out 16 batters, tied for the fourth-highest total in program history. It's the most for the Wofford staff since recording 17 on March 9, 2024, against Lafayette.
Â
Le Moyne reliever Billy Hoffacker (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs on three hits and three walks in 2.0 innings of work.
Â
The Terriers recorded 11 hits in the contest, led by
James Layman and
Hunter Herndon with two each. Layman recorded a career-high five RBI, three of which came on his bases-clearing triple. He added a walk as well. Herndon added an RBI, as did
Ryan Wynn,
Tyler Hare,
Andrew Mannelly, and
Lucas Grantham. Wynn and Mannelly clubbed doubles.
Â
Wofford swiped six bases in the game with
Tyler Bak recording half of them. Those three steals are a new career high.
Niko Brini, Layman, and Mannelly each collected one.
Â
The Dolphins opened the contest with three runs in the first, utilizing an RBI double, wild pitch, and RBI single for the 3-0 lead.
Â
Wofford responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to pull ahead. With runners on second and third,
Lucas Grantham's RBI groundout got the Terriers on the board.
James Layman added a two-run single later in the frame, and he was brought home on
Ryan Wynn's RBI double for a 4-3 lead.
Â
Le Moyne tied the contest in the top of the third with an RBI single, but
Tyler Hare's RBI single in the bottom of the inning pushed Wofford back in front by a run, 5-4.
Â
After a scoreless fourth, both offenses struck big in the fifth. In the top of the inning, the Dolphins lifted a three-run homer for a 7-5 lead. The Terriers responded in kind with five runs in the bottom of the frame to swing the pendulum back in their favor.
Hunter Herndon opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch later brought
Tyler Bak home after he was hit by a pitch and stole his way to third. Two walks and a hit batsman would load the bases for Layman, who delivered the lone hit of the inning, lacing a triple down the right field line into the corner, clearing the bases for a 10-7 lead.
Â
Le Moyne got a run back with an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth, but
Andrew Mannelly's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh nixed that score and kept Wofford ahead 11-8.
Â
That is where the margin remained as
Champ Davis entered to pitch in the eighth and polished off the final two innings to hold the Dolphins in check. Davis struck out the final two batters in the ninth to secure the 11-8 win and a series sweep.
Â
Wofford hits the road this week to kick off a stretch of seven-straight road games. The Terriers will travel to Clinton, South Carolina, on Tuesday, March 4, to face upstate foe Presbyterian. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m. Wofford then travels to Lexington, Kentucky, for a three-game weekend set against the University of Kentucky.
