Baseball Drops Tight Contest at Presbyterian

CLINTON, S.C. – It was a pitchers' duel Tuesday evening at the PC Baseball Complex, but the Wofford baseball team fell 4-3 to Presbyterian after a late two-run inning for the Blue Hose. Wofford falls to 11-2 as Presbyterian improves to 7-6.

Sheldon Egger started for the Terriers, pitching 4.0 innings with two runs allowed on three hits and one walk. He struck out a pair. Michael Sills (1-1) suffered the loss after pitching 2.1 innings with two runs allowed on four hits and one walk. He also struck out a pair. Champ Davis hurled the final 1.2 innings with two hits allowed and two strikeouts, surrendering no runs.

Blue Hose reliever Sean Hollister (1-1) picked up the win as the first pitcher out of the bullpen. He pitched 3.1 innings with one run allowed (unearned). Jacob Fiels (3) tallied a save after pitching the last inning.

Wofford's five hits were dispersed evenly between five players. The Terriers were patient and worked eight walks in the ballgame. Ryan Wynn worked two, reaching three times with his one hit. David Wiley also worked a pair of free passes. Hunter Herndon picked up the lone Wofford RBI with a sacrifice fly. Adam Haber stole a base in the contest, the lone one for Wofford.

The game opened as a true pitchers' duel with neither hurler willing to yield much. The first hit of the game did not come until the bottom of the third with a Presbyterian single, but a double play followed to immediately nullify it. Sheldon Egger faced the minimum through the first three frames.

The Blue Hose threatened in the fourth with a pair of runners in scoring position with one out, but Egger clamped down to escape the threat unscathed. The game was scoreless through four innings.

The Terriers rewarded their pitcher with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to break the scoreless tie by taking advantage of Presbyterian mistakes. With two on, a throwing error on a bunt allowed Tyler Hare to run home for the first run of the ballgame. With runners on the corners, an errant throw on a pickoff attempt let James Layman scurry home for the 2-0 lead.

Presbyterian responded immediately, however, plating two in the bottom of the fifth. An RBI double put the Blue Hose on the board, and a bunt single allowed the tying run to come across. But the Terriers clutched up as Lucas Manning nailed two runners trying to steal, and Michael Sills notched a strikeout for out three to limit the damage with the score knotted at 2-all.

Wofford pulled back in front with a run in the top of the sixth, taking advantage of another error. With runners on first and second, a pickoff throw to second sailed away and allowed Adam Haber to move over to third. Hunter Herndon promptly lifted a sacrifice fly to left and plated Haber for a 3-2 edge.

The pendulum swung once more in the bottom of the seventh when Presbyterian scored a pair to take the lead. An RBI triple tied the game, and a single up the middle brought in the go-ahead run. The game turned to the eighth with the Blue Hose ahead 4-3.

After a scoreless eighth, the Terriers had one last chance in the ninth but were unable to get a run across. Presbyterian held on for the 4-3 win.

Wofford will continue its road trip this weekend with a three-game series at No. 23 Kentucky. Game one in Lexington is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. with all three contests streaming on SEC Network +.
