Wofford Drops Series Finale Against Furman

Spartanburg, S.C.- Wofford softball (18-11, 2-1) dropped the final game of the three-game weekend series against Furman (11-21, 1-2) on Sunday, March 23, at Hope Field. The back-and-forth affair saw a Wofford comeback attempt cut short 4-3.

Freshman pitcher Natalya Salo took the circle for the Terriers and went through four innings of work with three hits and three runs given up. She struck out seven batters with three walks and four hit batters, the most in a single game in program history. The pitching baton was then passed to Abby Greenwood who went the final three innings with two hits and one run allowed.

Furman had Salo in a jam early by loading the bases with no outs, but she got out of the situation by only surrendering one run in the process. Wofford responded in the bottom of the first with an RBI double by Hope Ingle, her seventh of the season, to tie the score at 1-1. Furman retook the lead with one run in the third inning and then added one insurance run in the top of the fourth for a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, a Kate Platte RBI single made the score 2-3. However, a Wofford defensive error would allow Furman to reestablish the two-run lead in the top of the fifth. In the bottom half of the inning, Rivers Sampson clubbed an RBI double over the left fielder's head to score pinch-runner Bergan Needles to again put the Terriers one run down. After a quiet sixth and top seven, an Abby Gossett leadoff double, her third of the season, gave the Terriers the tying run in scoring position with no outs. However, the Paladins would get three straight outs to shut down the Wofford comeback and end the game in a 4-3 loss.

The Terriers travel up the road to play at USC Upstate on Wednesday, March 26. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
