Greensboro, N.C.- The Wofford softball team (19-12, 2-2) fell in the first game of the three-game weekend series against UNCG (24-10, 2-2) on Friday, March 28, in Greensboro. The Wofford offense had chances but couldn't capitalize in the 2-1 loss.
Wofford pitcher Margaret Axelson got the start for the Terriers and went six innings while giving up five hits with two runs allowed on four strikeouts. However, the two runs surrendered were enough for the Spartans to give Axelson the loss moving her record to 9-5 on the season.
Wofford took the early lead against UNCG with two quick hits by Kate Platte and Rivers Sampson which were followed by a Hope Ingle RBI single to give Wofford the 1-0 lead which extended Ingle's RBI streak to five games. Wofford would only rally four hits for the rest of the game leaving nine runners stranded on base as UNCG pitching clutched up in big moments.
Axelson held the explosive UNCG offense, which has scored 219 runs this season (17th best in the nation), at bay for four and two thirds' innings. A two out single in the bottom of the fifth inning drove in two RBIs to give the Spartans the 2-1 lead which they would not relinquish. The Terriers' best opportunity to score again was in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third with two outs but a caught looking strikeout blunted the momentum and ended the rally. Wofford went one-two-three in the seventh to end the game in a tough 2-1 loss.
The Terriers look to rally tomorrow, March 29, as they face UNCG in games two and three in a doubleheader to close out the series. The first pitch tomorrow at the UNCG Softball Stadium is set for 1:00 pm.
