CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Wofford baseball team deposited seven runs over the first five innings at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park Saturday afternoon, and the Terrier pitching tandem of
Cullen Condon and
Michael Sills kept The Citadel scoreless in Wofford's 7-0 triumph. The Terriers improve to 20-8 (2-0 SoCon) as the Bulldogs drop to 14-14 (2-3 SoCon).
Â
Wofford only needed two arms to notch the shutout with
Cullen Condon (1-0) hurling the first 7.0 frames as the starter, marking a new career high for the freshman. He surrendered only five hits and struck out five batters.
Michael Sills polished off the final 2.0 innings to secure the shutout, Wofford's first nine-inning shutout since March 7, 2023, at Winthrop. Sills gave up just one hit and one walk while striking out a pair.
Â
"I just got to thank my defense today and [
Pat Brown] for calling the pitches," said Condon of the shutout performance. "We just executed in the same area."
Â
"That was big. Those guys were attacking all day," said associate head coach
Pat Brown of the combined shutout. "On the weekend we have one walk, so we've just been attacking, throwing it up, and letting our defense play."
Â
The Citadel starter George Derrick Floyd (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits and two walks in 4.1 innings of action.
Â
The Terriers outhit the Bulldogs 14-6 with
Tyler Hare and
James Layman each collecting three base knocks. Hare added a pair of RBI, and Layman reached four times with a walk.
Tyler Bak and
David Wiley each added two hits. Wiley had an RBI alongside
Ryan Wynn,
Andrew Mannelly, and
Tanner Hardin.
Â
Both of Bak's hits were doubles with Layman and Wiley each posting one. Layman showed out on the basepaths with two steals.
Â
After both teams went down in order in the first, Wofford struck with the game's first run in the top of the second.
James Layman roped a one-out double down the left field line. After he swiped third,
Andrew Mannelly walked to place runners on the corners for
Tanner Hardin. The freshman placed down an excellent sacrifice bunt to score Layman for the 1-0 edge.
Â
The Terrier lead extended in the top of the third with three more runs.
Niko Brini led things off with a single, and
Tyler Bak's sacrifice bunt moved him over.
Tyler Hare poked a single to right that scored Brini, and Hare would score on
Ryan Wynn's single.
David Wiley then lifted a double over the center fielder's head to plate Wynn from first, stretching the advantage to 4-0.
Â
Wofford tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth. Bak led off with a double, and Hare's single brought him home. After a strikeout, Wiley singled and Layman walked to load the bases. Mannelly then ripped an infield single to first base, beating out the throw to the covering pitcher. Hare scored on the play, and Wiley would then score on a wild pitch to stretch the advantage further to 7-0.
Â
Pitching settled in for both teams from there as neither side posted a run over the final four-and-a-half frames of the game. The Citadel's best scoring opportunity was in the bottom of the seventh when a wild pitch advanced a runner to third base, but
Cullen Condon worked out of the jam to strand him 90 feet away.
Michael Sills would close out the affair in the bottom of the ninth to secure the 7-0 victory.
Â
The three-game series concludes tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
