Cullowhee N.C. - Wofford's softball program (26-15, 7-4 SoCon) took the opening two games against Western Carolina (20-22, 4-7 SoCon). In game one, Margaret Axelson pitched her 15th complete game of the season with some extra inning heroics that brought the Terriers a 3-2 victory. Game two saw the Wofford bats tack on three runs in the first inning to set the tone for the eventual 4-1 win. Â
Game 1Â
Margaret Axelson took the circle for the first game in the series, and she delivered another masterclass, going the complete game, her 15th of the year, with seven hits allowed on two runs scored and eight strikeouts. She improves her record to 12-6 on the year which ties her for second in the conference in wins. Â
The Catamounts got to Axelson early before she was able to settle into the game, as a single down the left field line put Western Carolina up 1-0. Wofford responded in the top of the second with a Kaytlin Greenwood RBI double to tie the game. Then after a stolen base by Greenwood, Rivers Sampson smacked an RBI single up the middle to give the Terriers the 2-1 lead.  The game transformed into a pitcher's duel after the early runs being scored with only five hits allowed until the bottom of the seventh inning. In the bottom of seventh, the Catamounts tied the game up with a solo shot to send the game into extra innings. Â
In the top of eighth with pinch runner Desirae Devine standing on second, Kalli Petty hit a single through the left side of the infield to score the speedy Devine to again give Wofford the 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Western was able to put a runner on third with two outs but was unable to score as Axelson closed out the game for a Wofford 3-2 win. Â
Game 2Â
Game two started off all Terriers in the first inning as Wofford scored three in the first inning. Abby Gossett started it off with an RBI single down the left field line scoring Hannah Maddox from second base. The next batter, Brianna Stanley, hit a two-run home run to give Wofford the early 3-0 cushion. Â
That was all the starter Abby Greenwood needed as she went the complete game with six hits, one run, three walks and eight strikeouts to improve her record to 8-4 on the year. Â
The Catamounts scored a run in the bottom of the second inning when Abby Greenwood walked in a runner with the bases loaded, but the sophomore from Virginia got out of the bases juiced jam with an inning ending groundout. After the second inning spot, Greenwood would only allow three hits for the rest of the game. In the top of the sixth, the Terriers added another insurance run as a Kaytlin Greenwood single brought home pinch runner Bergan Needles to put the final score at 4-1. This most recent win has extended Wofford's win streak to six this season, which is the longest in program history. Â
