Women’s Lacrosse Suffers Road Loss At High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team was defeated 24-10 by High Point University at Vert Stadium. The Panthers took a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter as they never trailed in the contest and limited the Terriers' offensive chances.  
 
Bria Foley led the team with two goals and two assists for four points, with Olivia Graebner, Carlie Cutinella, and Laura Montagna each adding two goals. The Panthers had a 41 to 21 advantage in shots and a 21-14 edge in draw controls. Vivian Chiomento led the way with seven draw controls and she is now the career leader in the category with 131, topping the previous record of 130.
 
The Panthers had 11 turnovers, eight of which were forced by the Terriers with Emma Stalteri and Olivia Graebner each causing two. Barrett Rowe and Brooke Meltcher each had three ground balls to lead the team. Ella Smithers and Hannah Taylor both had four saves in goal.  
 
The Terriers won the opening draw control and had the first shot on goal, but the Panthers had a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 12:41 mark. They added five more goals for a 6-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Wofford won the draw to start the second quarter and Laura Montagna quickly got the Terriers on the board at the 14:39 mark for a 6-1 game. The Panthers scored the next two goals before Olivia Graebner added a goal for an 8-2 score with 12:47 left in the second quarter. The next two goals were scored by High Point as they extended the lead to 10-2.
 
Wofford answered with another goal by Laura Montagna to cut the lead to 10-3 at 10:34 in the second quarter, but the Panthers scored the next four goals for a 14-3 advantage with six minutes remaining in the half. Carlie Cutinella scored at the 4:35 mark and Mia Leon added a goal with under a minute left, but Wofford trailed 15-5 at the end of the first half.
 
The Panthers scored the first goal of the third quarter before Olivia Graebner scored for the Terriers for a 16-6 score at 11:51 in the quarter. After another High Point goal, Ella Bartlett had a free position goal at the 7:56 mark. The Panthers scored the next four goals as they pushed the lead to 21-7 at the end of the third quarter. The fourth quarter started with three straight goals by High Point got a 24-7 advantage before Carlie Cutinella scored for Wofford with 7:59 left in the game. Bria Foley scored twice in the last four minutes for the 24-10 final score.
 
High Point is 10-5 overall and 6-1 in league play. The Panthers were led by Reese Dowgiallo with four goals and five assists for nine points.
 
Wofford (6-9, 3-3) will host Gardner-Webb on Saturday, April 19, for the final regular season home game of the season with a 1:00 p.m. start.
