Women’s Lacrosse Secures 16-4 Win Over Gardner-Webb

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team scored first and never looked back on the way to a dominant 16-4 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. In the final home regular season game for the Terriers, they were up 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and scored the next nine goals to put the contest out of reach.
 
The Terriers were led by Bria Foley with eight points on two goals and six assists. Carley Irvin had four goals and an assist, with eight other players getting at least one goal. Wofford had a 34 to 11 advantage in shots and a 17 to 7 lead in draw controls, with Vivian Chiomento recording nine.
 
The Runnin' Bulldogs had 28 turnovers, 15 of which were forced by the Terriers. Olivia Graebner and Barrett Rowe each had three caused turnovers to pace the team. Wofford had a 30 to 25 advantage in ground balls, as 14 different Terriers picked up at least one. Emma Stalteri and Brooke Meltcher led the team with four ground balls each. Ella Smithers had three saves in the first three quarters and Hannah Taylor had one save in the fourth quarter.
 
Several milestones were reached by Terriers in the game, including single-season goals (Bria Foley, 48), single-season ground balls (Barrett Rowe 55), and Carley Irvin with 100+ career goals. In addition, Katie Brosseau had her first career goal.
 
The Terriers had a pair of goals by Olivia Graebner and a goal by Carley Irvin to take a 3-0 lead with 4:03 left in the first quarter. The Runnin' Bulldogs got on the board a minute later and the Wofford lead was 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
 
The second quarter belonged to the Terriers, as they scored seven straight goals in the quarter. Bria Foley, Carley Irvin and Carlie Cutinella each found the back of the net twice, while McKenzie Moeller added a goal as well as the Wofford lead was 10-1 at the half.
 
Wofford continued the scoring run with goals by Ella Bartlett and Christina Mallon as the lead extended to 12-1 with 7:33 left in the third quarter. The Runnin' Bulldogs responded with three straight goals to make it a 12-4 game at the end of the third quarter. Emma Stalteri and Carley Irvin had the first two goals in the fourth quarter for a 14-4 advantage. Christina Mallon and Katie Brosseau each scored in the final six minutes for the 16-4 final margin of victory for the Terriers.
 
Gardner-Webb is 2-13 overall and 2-5 in league play. The Runnin' Bulldogs had four goals by four different players and goalie Emma Anderson had ten saves.
 
Wofford (7-9, 4-3) will visit Presbyterian College on Saturday, April 26, to close out the regular season. With today's win, the Terriers have clinched a spot in the Big South Tournament for the first time.
