CLINTON, S.C. – The Wofford College women's lacrosse team scored first and left Bailey Memorial Stadium with a 15-9 win over Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Terriers set a new single-season record for wins with eight. They also secured a home game in the Big South Tournament for the first time in school history.
The Terriers were led by
Bria Foley with three goals and four assists for seven points, while
Carley Irvin had six points on five goals and an assist.
Carlie Cutinella and
Ella Bartlett each added a pair of goals. Draw controls were even at 13 each, with
Mia Leon (8) and
Vivian Chiomento (4) leading the Terriers. Shots were also even at 23 each.
Wofford caused 16 of the 26 turnovers by Presbyterian, with
Olivia Graebner,
Barrett Rowe and
Mia Leon each causing three turnovers. Wofford had a 22 to 21 lead in ground balls, as
Olivia Graebner,
Barrett Rowe,
Brooke Meltcher, and
Mia Leon each picked up three.
Ella Smithers had eight saves in goal.
Milestones reached by Terriers in the game included single-season points (
Bria Foley, 93), single-season assists (
Bria Foley, 42), most single-season draw controls (
Vivian Chiomento, 78), and most goalie wins (
Ella Smithers, 8). The eight wins overall and the five conference wins are both the most in school history.
The Terriers took an early 2-0 lead after a pair of goals by
Carley Irvin. The Blue Hose got on the board with 6:02 left in the first quarter to make it a 2-1 game. With 27 seconds left in the quarter,
Bria Foley scored for a 3-1 lead.
Ella Bartlett scored twice in less than a minute as the Terriers extended the lead to 5-1 with 12:08 on the clock in the second quarter. After a goal by the Blue Hose,
Bria Foley scored at the 8:25 mark for a 6-2 advantage.
Carley Irvin completed the first half hat trick with a goal with 53 seconds left. A free position goal by Irvin with only two seconds remaining gave the Terriers an 8-2 lead at the half.
After Presbyterian scored the first goal of the third quarter, Wofford responded with a 4-0 run that included two goals by
Carlie Cutinella and one each by
Christina Mallon and
Laura Montagna as the Terriers had a 12-3 advantage with 7:27 on the clock. The Blue Hose answered with three straight goals to cut the lead to 12-6, but
Bria Foley scored for a hat trick with 2:14 left in the quarter. A late goal by Presbyterian made it a 13-7 game at the end of the quarter.
Wofford's
McKenzie Moeller scored six minutes into the fourth quarter to make it a 14-7 game. The Blue Hose added a goal,
Carley Irvin answered as the Terriers had a 15-8 lead with 2:24 left. Presbyterian scored with 30 seconds remaining for the final 15-9 margin.
"I think everyone played together," said head coach
Jessie Aguglia. "Obviously we knew that the ride was going to be an important part of the game today, and I think we did a really good job of hustling till the end. I think there are some things we can clean up going into Tuesday, but overall, we're super excited."
Presbyterian ends the season at 5-11 overall and 2-5 in league play. The Blue Hose were led by Kaylie Rittmueller with two goals and an assist for three points. The Terriers now have a 5-3 lead in the series.
Wofford (8-9, 5-3) will be the #4 seed and host #5 seed Winthrop on Tuesday, April 29, in the quarterfinals of the Big South Tournament. This will be the first time Wofford has appeared in the Big South postseason, and it is the first time hosting.
