Wofford Softball Achieves First Series Sweep in Program History

Spartanburg, S.C.- In the final two games of a weekend series against Mercer, the Wofford softball team had back-to-back walk off wins to secure the first sweep in program history on Saturday afternoon at Hope Field. The Terriers (23-15, 5-4 SoCon) scored all seven of their runs on the day in the seventh inning to sweep the Bears (19-20, 1-6 SoCon).

Game 1

Abby Greenwood received the circle for the Terriers in game one of the doubleheader and pitched a complete game with six hits, two runs allowed, one walk and 10 strikeouts. It was her second 10+ strikeout game of the season, along with the March 1 contest against South Dakota.

Both teams struggled offensively early as both pitchers were lights out to start the game. In the third, Mercer got on the board with a sacrifice fly and then extended the lead by one run in the fourth inning to put the Terriers down 2-0. The Wofford bats were left dormant until the bottom of the seventh with two outs when Kalli Petty singled to score the shortstop Kaytlin Greenwood to cut the deficit to just one run. The next batter, Hope Ingle, walked to set up freshman Rivers Sampson. She placed a double down the left field line scoring both runners on base to win the game in walk off fashion 3-2.

Game 2

Game two saw Margaret Axelson start the final game of the series but she was limited in her fourth appearance of this week. Axelson went 1.2 innings with five hits and three runs allowed, with only one being earned. This brought out freshman Natalya Salo, who did not allow a hit or a run in 5.1 innings pitched in relief with four strikeouts.

Mercer got on the board early as two errors by the usually reliable Wofford defense put the Bears up 3-0. However, Salo silenced the Mercer attack for the rest of the game giving Wofford a chance to comeback. Like the first game, the Terrier bats were held in check by the Mercer defense for the majority of the game. However, in the bottom of the seventh Wofford would find life as Mercer walked the bases loaded with one out. The hot bat of Hope Ingle came up to the plate and also drew a walk to bring the score 3-1. This brought up Rivers Sampson, who again delivered in the clutch, tying the game at 3-3 with a two-run single. The next batter, Brianna Stanley, drove in the game-winning RBI with a single to complete the comeback in walk-off fashion in a 4-3 Wofford win. These two recent walk-offs have now put Wofford's walk-offs victories this year to eight this season.

Wofford will return to action against Presbyterian on Tuesday, April 8, in a midweek matchup at Hope Field. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 pm.
