Women’s Lacrosse Downs Winthrop 14-7

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After scoring the first four goals of the game, the Wofford College women's lacrosse team came away with a 14-7 win over Winthrop on Wednesday afternoon at Gibbs Stadium. With a 7-5 lead late in the third quarter, the Terriers went on a 6-0 run to pull away from the Eagles and earn their first home win of the season.
 
Nine different Terriers scored in the game, led by Bria Foley with four goals and three assists. The three assists put her at 66, a new Wofford career record. Foley also reached the 150 career goals mark. Emma Stalteri and Carley Irvin each added two goals.
 
For the second straight game, Wofford had a commanding lead in shots, with 30 to Winthrop's 16. The Terriers also had a 13 to 12 advantage in draw controls, with Vivian Chiomento and Bria Foley each having five.
 
The Eagles had 24 turnovers, 14 of which were forced by the Terriers. Barrett Rowe and Carley Irvin each had three caused turnovers. Brooke Meltcher had a team-high six ground balls and Olivia Graebner added four as Wofford had a 24 to 22 advantage in that category. Ella Smithers had five saves in goal.
 
The Terriers scored the first goal of the game two minutes into play as Bria Foley gave Wofford a 1-0 lead. A goal by Ella Bartlett, another goal by Bria Foley, and a women-up goal by Ainsley Towle pushed the advantage to 4-0 at the 9:39 mark of the first period. Winthrop scored twice, but an unassisted goal by Olivia Graebner had the Wofford lead at 5-2 at the end of the first period. The second quarter went by with each team scoring once, with a Terrier goal by Laura Montagna giving Wofford the 6-3 lead at the half.
 
Emma Stalteri opened the scoring in the third quarter, but the Eagles responded with back-to-back goals for a 7-5 game with 5:08 on the clock. From there, Wofford would go on a 6-0 run to put the contest out of reach. Bria Foley began the run with 27 seconds left in the third quarter for an 8-5 lead. The streak continued with goals by Carley Irvin, Bria Foley, Carlie Cutinella, McKenzie Moeller, and Emma Stalteri for a 13-5 lead with 6:12 remaining in the game. After a goal by the Eagles, Carley Irvin added a goal for a 14-6 lead. Winthrop scored with 2:02 remaining, Wofford's Brooke Meltcher picked up a ground ball with 54 seconds left and the Terriers were able to hold the ball until time expired for the victory.
 
Winthrop is 4-8 overall and 2-2 in league play. The Eagles were led by Scarlet Cifarelli with five goals and one assist.
 
Wofford (5-8, 2-2) will remain at home on Saturday, April 12, when they host Radford at 2:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
