SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Wofford women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought match against UNC Asheville at Snyder Field on Sunday night. The Terriers move to 0-2-0 for the season.
FIRST HALF:
The Terriers started where they left off from Thursday night's game with the physical offense. Nearing the 10
th minute, defender
Delaney Minor was the first Terrier to strike with a shot attempt out right.
The Terriers looked to build the momentum as forward
Saachi Bureau went for a shot on goal near the bottom right corner but was saved by the Bulldogs' goalkeeper Gracie Murray.
The Bulldogs had a chance to score down the field, but the Terriers defense held it tight, forcing an Asheville corner kick.
After an intense back and forth between the teams, the Terriers found themselves down the field once more. With fresh legs off the bench,
Mary Liese Grier found the ball in her possession and went for a shot on goal in the bottom center but was saved by Murray.
The Bulldogs didn't hesitate to answer right back with back-to-back shot attempts.
The half ended with
Charlotte Simas going for her only shot on goal for the night in the top right corner but was quickly saved.
The Terriers ended the half with four shot attempts, compared to the Bulldogs' three. The Bulldogs had one corner kick, and Murray with three saves.
SECOND HALF:
The Bulldogs started the second half strong with a shot on goal in the first 23 seconds but was saved by
Elizabeth Navola.
With over seven minutes of tightened defense by the Terriers, the Bulldogs broke through to get another shot on goal to the bottom center, where Navola was there for the save.
Bureau swiftly went in for her second shot on goal for the night but was saved by Murray.
Despite back-to-back-to-back shot attempts and two corner kicks by the Bulldogs, the Terriers' defense was able to hold firm.
At the 65
th minute on an unassisted free kick, the Bulldogs' Lily Adams was able to sink the first goal of the night into the top corner.
The Terriers kept putting on an intense battle until the very end but couldn't quite break through.
Despite their 1-0 loss, the Terriers put up 14 shots with six being on goal compared to the Bulldogs putting up nine shots with three on goal.
Navola had two saves in this match compared to the Bulldogs' Murray with six.
Freshman
Emme Curran had her collegiate debut tonight, posting 28 minutes for Wofford. Sophomore
Annie Andrews saw her first start of the season tonight, finishing with 43 minutes and one shot attempt.
Junior
McKinley High posted a season-high of 37 minutes with one shot attempt in tonight's match.
The Terriers are back in action against Navy on Thursday at 5 p.m. for their first road match of the season in Annapolis, Maryland.
